House Extension Blog - Side, Back & Below

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica][FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica]Hello,

I have found this site really useful and thought I would share my (ongoing) experience of my extension with everyone.

We bought this house in the middle of last year and have now got the planning permission and the work has been under way for just over a month.

we are having a two storey extension built on the back and side, but are also excavating below the side extension to build a lower level garage.

Anyway you can check my progress (with pictures) at

    some bad news today, the builders have managed to cut through the electricity cable cutting off the supply to 3 houses. I wonder how much that is going to cost to repair.

    They say that it was only buried 6inches below the drive when it should be at least 18 inches.

    Thats a big project you have on your hands. We are going to be doing a side extension next year and its great to see the different stages of the building work being done.

    I am a bit scared that I have bitten off more then I can chew. The costs seems to be going up as well.

    The good thing is that after all those months of battling with the planning department we are now getting on to the more fun bits like choosing kitchens, bathrooms etc.

    we are estimating the total cost to be in the region of £120k with us doing a lot of work ourselves and also hiring the plumber, plasterer, electrician separately.

    The builders have been great so far (apart from a few issues like this eleci cable). Hopefully the shell should be completed and weather proof by mid December and we can then sort out the inside.

    Deciding how many electric sockets to have (and where to put them), also considering putting in an ethernet network and obviously a wired alarm system. I like my gadgets so this is quite interesting if a lot of work.

    We are only at the planning stage but we are going to try and do a lot of the work ourselves as we have a limited budget. That said we are only planning a single storey side extension and loft conversion so its a lot less than your project.

    With the planning its worth negotiating with the planning department. When we started off they wanted us to have half the extension they eventually have allowed. We went so far as taking pictures of other extended properties to help our case.

    good luck with your extension, there is a lot of red tape when dealing with the planning department.
