Clean PC (nothing on but OS) but with 100% CPU usage, hardware problem?

Argh… after getting rid of a virus of my computer I was happy. I uninstalled Norton SystemWorks and Norton Internet security and the virus went along with them, but not long after that my computer started perform really badly, like I could tell that it wasn’t 100% how it should be.
It would be okay if I wasn't doing anything on it, but the simplest of things, like moving a program window around the screen would cause the CPU usage to rocket to 100%, this has been the case for a week now. So I decided to get rid of the problem once and for all by reformatting the hard drive… I thought this would fix the problem as I would have NO programs or anything to cause it to behave so badly.
So I reformatted today and reinstalled Windows XP only to find that the problem with 100% is still there.
Now my computer has a 200GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, and a 3.20MHz processor, so there is no way it should perform so poorly with those specs.
Also another thing I noticed is that when clicking 'Start --> Turn off Computer', the 'Stand By' option is disabled and I can't click it, and that has never been like that before.
Is it possible this is a hardware error? Or what?? I don’t know
Any help would be greatly appreciated – many thanks, Stervo

how do you know the virus has gone ? if it was a boot sector virus the reformat may not have touched it.
do you know what virus had been detected ?
have you run a new visur check, with the latest virus database ?Karma is a wonderful thing.

Haha I feel stupid, I think its all sorted out, Norton took away some of my needed motherboard drivers (I think) thats why it was under-performing, looks like I could have just reinstalled those and not bother reformatting, ahh well. Its another lesson I've learnt I guess. At least now it feels 'clean' which is nice.
Can a mod please delete this useless thread now?
Thanks - Stervo0 -
jonnyb, the virus was only JAVA_BYTEVER.A which I think is a pretyt common, low risk one and I think it deffinately was deleted, but as I said, I think its all 100% sorted, thanks for your quick helpful reply though
