I am coming to this afresh, so forgive me if I ask a stupid question, but why would you want to exchange 12 years of income with 6.5 years of income?

I guess the scenrios you (or your family) might be better off are
    1) you die
    2) you get better
    3) something happen to the insurance company or claim to mean you don't get paid.

On the face of it, I have to say it seems like a strange thing to do to accept less and you also potentially have taxation issues.
So perhaps you can explain why you are thinking of accepting this as the reasons are certainly no obvious to me.

Again sorry if it's stupid but it might help people understand where you are coming from.
