Cheapest way to carpet a room

Hi,

I have recently had a garage conversion completed in my house. I now need to get this room carpetted, but have been staggered by the quotes I have been given (around £400 from the high street chains for a fitting very average carpet with average underlay, £375 from an independent for fitting a slightly better carpet and better underlay). Am I being naive or is there a cheaper way of doing this?

I used to live in a different area (so had a better idea of where to go, who to use, etc...) and had the living room, hall, stairs and landing all done (admitedly with an average standard carpet) for less than this.

Being a garage conversion the room is a slightly non-standard shape (approx 5.5M X 2.7M), but I was hoping to get the whole job done for no more than £250. I would buy the components seperately and do the job myself, but I'd prefer a professional job as I wouldn't want to ruin the excellent job that the builder who converted the garage did.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

find yourself a carpet place that does roll ends and off cuts and see if you can find something you like in the right size. Thats about as cheap as it gets.

Thanks for that latecomer. The problem I have found with roll ends is finding something in the right size, at the right price. I've used roll ends in the past for smaller rooms, and found plenty of choice at good prices, but for a room this size the choice is much smaller and the price much higher.

I think you might struggle then as the 5.5m length is whats going to be whats making it expensive. You could consider doing it in 2 bits as that would probably be cheaper but as you say you dont want to ruin the good job the builder has done so perhaps its worth paying the extra for.
