store/play hi def movies on ps3

Hi folks

Can you store / hi def files(movies/tv shows) on ps3 hdd ? if so whats the best format, so i dont lose too much quality through playback. I have been looking at H264 avi files i think these will play up to 720p, but really looking to get BD RIP to store/play on ps3 .

AVis and DIVXs tend to work fine. A few formats havnt worked (Including some 'odd' AVI's)
Personally I use an external harddrive (needs to be formated FAT32 to work with the PS3 ~ which gives a file limit of 4 gig each)

Even upscaled AVIs look fantastic (so long as they were originally encoded well)

Im not sure what you mean by 'BD' rip??

    blu-ray disc?

anyway, i think what they mean is that they want to copy the movie from the BD disk to the ps3's hdd

Well the PS3 isnt going to do that, THATS for sure (Sony would probably end up being sued for starters)

you can copy bluray films to the ps3 harddrive, though i think its best to use an external harddrive plugged into the ps3 usb to copy the films to as the harddrive will fill up quickly as the files can be large ,the ext drive must be fat32 format for ps3 to recognise it (swissknife is a good tool for this). The films are stored for upload in a container called matroska (mkv)the ps3 dont play mkv files at the moment (maybe in a firmware update cuz divx7 will support mkv files)you use a free program called mkv2vob which simply takes the file from the mkv container and puts it into a ps3 compatible container of your choice,mpeg,m2ts,vob etc ,the film isnt transcoded or touched so this is quick and doesnt lose any quality, 5mins or so,longer if it have dts audio as it convert this to ac3. Quick summary, you get your bluray rip from wherever, lets politely say the rain is TORRENTial (sure you know what i mean),search 720p 1080p,so you patiently wait for the film, when its complete you pass it through mkv2vob with fat32 set in the split option, this split the film into 4 gig parts, you then plug your ext harddrive into your pc and copy the repackaged film to it,plug the hard drive into ps3 usb look under video on ps3 xmb, press triangle on the ext harddrive icon and voila there is your hd playable bluray

Yup, thats not actually RIPPING a bluray to the drive though is it :p

Ill check out that vob converter though. Ive had THE THING stored on my external hardrive waiting for sony to update its firmware. Does it play in dolby digital then?

    Cheers Macey :D

  • yes they play in dolby digital,http://www.bitburners.com/articles/convert-mkv-files-for-playstation-3-using-mkv2vob/4022/ is a good guide for mkv2vob,though i personaly dont recomend transcode setting to auto, best set to never transcode as it sometimes transcode wen it dont need to,i never come across a 720p that did nt play straight off,1080p are about 50/50,but i still try never first if it dont work set it to auto, transcodin 1080p is real time consuming upto 12 hours on my pc,

So transcoding is done purely to FIX it if it doesnt work first time round?

  • 720 always work fine with mkv2vob set to never transcode, sometimes 1080 need transcoding, but i still try with it set to never first,mkv2vob only takes a few mins with transcode set to never,so you will now the results if its gonna work or not quickly, thanks for the thanks cheers (most of the films are already in x264 or a codec that ps3 will play anyway)
