What about a swap site like https://www.readitswapit.com (or co.uk)?
  • Yes I endorse the Book People suggestion.

Has he tried Michael Morpurgo and Anthony Horowitz - there are some great Horowitz thrillers for younger kids - Groosham Grange, and a series about a pair of detective brothers whose name escapes me. My girls are 8 and 10 and they both love Just William - we have most of those in both book and CD.

Also, at that sort of age they love things like joke books, poetry and annuals. Mine read the Beano annuals over and over again.
  • Horrible science?

My mum used to take me to WH Smiths and Waterstones and ask me to choose my favourites..... she'd make a note of them then buy them in charity shops, although now Amazon would be easier than traipsing around lots of shops. Also Amazon shows similar books available (and you can sell any unwanted books!)

My son likes Horrid Henry books, and another series by Cressida Cowell with titles such as "learn to speak Dragonese", "how to train your Viking", "how to be a pirate" etc.
Here I go again on my own....

My son is 8 and a bookworm. He and his friends seem to love :-

    Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey

    Astrosaurus by Steve Cole

All the Hiccup Horrendous Haddock series by Cressida Cowell eg. Heroes guide to deadly dragons, How to train a viking.

He has read them all and was also a fan of Horrid Henry. I really, really recommend these books, I particularly like the Cressida Cowell ones and my son laughs out loud at Captain Underpants, as well as them all stretching his reading. The are all long series with many in the collection.

Mine read his way through the extensive local library by the age of 8/9  (all the books that interested him, though he's not especially picky). He did other things too, he just reads very fast, and doesn't need much sleep. We had to bus to libraries all over our end of the city to keep him in reading material, withdrawing the max number each time, so be warned, it may get worse.

R.e. buying books, have a look on amazon, search for books he likes, and use the 'more like this tool', it's very helpful, especially combined with other peoples reviews of books on there.
    Anytime;)

My 7 year old is reading everything in site at the moment too, he brought a book home from the school library which he's really keen on, 'Neville the Devil'.

He's also reading Grimms Fairy Tales at the moment, I always loved The Fisherman and his Wife..Oh man of the sea, come listen to me, for Alice my wife, the plague of my life, has sent me to beg a boon of thee! My poor Dad was made to read that about 3 times each night!

For a non-fiction book what about something like the Guiness Book of Records, boys are usually really interested in all the different things in them.

He reads some Harry Potter too but also wants to start from one that he hasn't seen the film of.
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D

What about getting some off Ebay cheap? You might be able to get a little bundle, depending on the cost of the postage.

As another member mentioned, freecycle is brilliant. Everyone should be a member of their local one in my opinion!! It's great because rather than waiting for the right books to come up you can simply add a request on for wanted old books and wait for people to respond to you! Good luck!
