Pet safe fly repellent?

Options
We've got a small fly problem in our house, I think brought in from the little compost caddy that we have in the kitchen. We've cleaned it out, bleached etc all that and they seem to be subsiding but there are still quite a few and there are only so many times I am going to put up with flies getting in my wine! ;)

Does anyone know of a pet safe fly repellent, I've seen things like honey in jars but i dont really want that lying around the house. I have a cat and two indoor guinea pigs.

Any tips appreciated, thanks!

Could you spray one room at a time? and shut the animals and yourselves out of it for an hour or so then open the windows for a while. I've done that with cats and dogs but I don't know if GPs are especially sensitive to chemicals.

If they are little black flies like fruit flies, whatever you use you need to treat skirting boards, under kitchen cuboards etc otherwise you'll never get rid of the pesky things.

The other option is to ring your vets and ask them if there are any particular chemicals you should avoid and then start reading the tins!!!!

    Good Luck

We use one of those eclectic fly swats as we are plagued with flies being surrounded by farms and the resultant muck spreading :(

Also fly papers hung high in the utility by the back door where they aren't seen so easily

    Thanks for the tips.
If we get a sunnyish day any time soon (wishful thinking!) I'll try and get put the guinea pigs in the run outside and put the cat upstairs so we can spray the place. Our house is very open place so its hard to isolate just one room downstairs, and its hard to carry a guinea pig cage up the stairs!

They are small black fruit flies yes, why are skirting boards etc important? is that where they breed? :o
