I was thinking that too but did not have the link - saw them advertising half day courses in loads of things last week, from sorting out tax and self assessment to basic accounting and "marketing".If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

How about a spending diary so you can see how you spending is working out? You might find habits and spot places where money just disappears. I think the main problem is the variability of the income. I think once you can get a grip on exactly how much money you OH is making you can then work out the best way to tackle it - ie him to put his prices up/get regular employment/you get a job/cut back in the budget etc but I think the income is at the heart of the problem. I know a lot of people on here have had problems with self employment and the income coming in at odd times.
Good Luck with it all

if he is self employed he wont be taxed at source , how do you factor in tax payments?0

Also to add, do you get child tax credits and child benefit? These are missing from your SOA

Good question! I know that he has a business bank account with a savings account attached to it that he was putting across money each month - I know we haven't put anything in for a couple of months, but he also did 2 months work on CIS so he has some vouchers. I just hope there's enough in there when we do our online tax return. Also to add, do you get child tax credits and child benefit? These are missing from your SOA
I've done this bit wrong! oops, I've added my CTC and CB together and put it under my earnings. How about a spending diary so you can see how you spending is working out?
This is a great idea, I'm already very conscious of what I'm spending, for example - I made hot dogs for lunch and I was adding up the cost of lunch for me and my daughter (about 35p, asda value hot dogs and 'wooops' bread buns down to 10p for 12) which is great seen as I got into the habit of doing the stay at home mum thing and popping to cafes and things. We won't be doing that anymore!!
I'm sure that I can cut down on my groceries, and once again, on the SOA I'm not sure if it's 100% accurate as I go various supermarkets to take advantage of the 'offers' (we actually loiter round asda for an hour before closing on a Sunday and can usually stock up on extremely cheap bread and occasionally meat and fish which we freeze).
I'm going to have a look at the business link website today and find out more about that.
I'm also going to look at the templates that I had written for invoices and estimates and check the wording - and add the part about a % upfront for materials and then stage payments etc. The more things I can think of the better. I might even go through the online supermarkets and see if I can plan next weeks shopping and make it as cheap as possible, then I'll have a better Idea what the actually grocery bill should be.
I've said it a few times, but this is just so helpful! not only the wonderful suggestions from everyone and the introduction to such useful websites - but it starts me brain storming myself! finally .. the fog is lifting!!0 -
Hey Bell,
If you do any online shopping (I do my supermarket stuff online now to stop me overspending) check out the other forums because there are always gazillions of vouchers for free delivery etc. Before I do an online shop I go to Quidco first (see my signature at the bottom?) its a cashback cooperative and basically if its supporting where you're gonna shop - you get cashback! It takes a few months to come through, but its extra cash for nothing!
I've also listed all of my old books on Amazon and am currently blitzing my house of clutter to sell on ebay!
Best way to shop cheaply is to drop a brand (but I think you know that already). Things like soap are better than shower gel cos it lasts longer!

Water rates............................. 60
Telephone (land line)................... 30
Mobile phone............................ 50
That cant be right? £60 for water per month?
Also, with the likes of 18185/1899, etc around £30 for a landline is very expensive, if you have internet look into VoIP, you can call a number of countries for free, including UK. I rarely spend more than the basic £12 (or whatever it is) on my line rental, all calls are free.
Thought about getting a PAYG instead? £50 for mobile phone(s) isnt cheap. There are £10/15 deals out there with no tie ins and hundreds of free minutes included.
Just a though, and where I can see a saving being made.0
