basically its a pain - dont support home users you have no control of the environment - look after business users and lock them down :)

  • I use to charge £7 an hour... but the year was 1995 and I was 15 :)

Now my company charges my time out at £97 an hour, oh how things have changed.

I would never consider doing consumer PC repairs (people don't appreciate that people with 'the knowledge' also want paying a living wage), but do fix my in-laws PC which is constantly having problems (still not sure how they blew their USB ports)

Completely and utterly worthless. One only has to look at the reasons the MCSE was devalued. You could do a home study course, take the test and become MCSE without ever having touched a network or server. In fact I reckon you could have passed the MCSE without ever having touched a computer if the paper based course materials were good enough.

I couldn't agree more.We had people joining our compamy with no end of paper qualifications but didn't have a clue how to logically faultfind on any of our equipment.Bring back apprenticeships!

    I don't bother with b2b, I just fix PC's for friends, family & workmates.
Just had to work on one which took 3 evenings & all day Saturday (thanks to AOL 9.0 VR taking ownership of almost all the registry files), charged him £50.00, the PC was worth no more than £60.00, but to him it was priceless.
I prefer repairing consumer PC's as they have a higher call-back & therefore higher potential earnings.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

    Member #1 of £1,000 challenge - £13.74/ £1000 (that's 1.374%)

    3-6 month EF £0/£3600 (that's 0 days worth)

  • I wouldn't touch a home users machine with a barge-pole, the problems they have are so stupid it's a waste of time doing anything with them for what you get paid for the time. Working for businesses looking after their infrastructure is where the fun is at. Good pay for good exposure to good kit in a managed environment, sweet.

so basically you are saying you work on another persons machine, and charge that person for that time, whilst you are working on another and charging another for your time??, sounds a bit dishonest to me?.

Too bloody right I do. Why shouldn't I use the 30 minutes machine 1 is downloading to go do another job? After all, at the end of the day, the job card for both computers has the correct amount of time that job has taken on them and there's nothing fraudulent about it.

Is it any different to the hairdresser who goes off to start another client whilst the missus is under the hairdryer, or the car sprayer who goes off to do another job whilst a car is baking in the spraybooth? Or are we just supposed to sit there like lemons twiddling our thumbs throwing money away? No problem with that but expect the rates to double.

They don't. I had a business client where I went in every 4 weeks to check everything was tickety boo. I'd set one machine off running then go onto the next one etc and by the time I'd got to machine no.20, no.1 had just finished. £400 in 2hrs and only 15 minutes travelling time. I thank you. I can waste 2hrs travelling to 8 customers.

i know that quote is not easy to read due to the other post but yes it is very different, a hairdresser has a fixed rate and you are not paying for the time, same with a spray job.
I wasn't talking about work flow management as you appear to be which is all well and good, but if you read the OP, then that guys response and then my response it will be clearer.

    Are you serious?!

I've been an IT director for many years - primarily as consultant - and if you think there is more money in consumer PCs, then, with all due respect, I don't think you know much about the industry, nor rates and salaries. Let alone the respect and career prospects in the industry.

Agree with Conor re the MCSE too, total waste of time.
