AC/DC adaptor for little TV

Dear all, I bought a little tv to use in my motorhome and kitchen at home, it's an Evesham DA104 DVD/DVB/AT/AV. Really nice little gizmo, sound isn't exactly wonderful for music but fine for speech which is what I want.

However, the adaptor has died on me. I rang up, - only to find that Evesham are no more and the company who have taken over only have replacements for the main kit, not the adaptor. I went to a local electric shop who said they'd have to send away and another who sold me a multi-use adaptor. On the plug that doesn't work it says Power Supply Adaptor, Model BHD-DY24XL. Input 100v-240v ~ 50Hz/60Hz 0.4A MAX. Output +12v--- (and there's a solid line above the 3 - s, can't do that on the pc!) 2000mA and then loads of symbols.

I've tried using the multipurpose one following instructions that aren't very clear but it started smoking so I gave up. I have a house full of adaptors from various electrical things over the years and wonder if I'm making this harder than it seems and one of those will do. I know nothing about all of this so would be so grateful if anyone can help me to track down the right adaptor. The tv works fine - it comes with a car lighter power cable, and there's no problem with that, just the one to plug in in the house.

Sorry if this sounds confusing - it is!! I'm sure that it can't be that unusual and that I can pick up what I need anywhere but as I don't understand all the numbers and symbols I have no way of knowing what would be ok to use - I haven't found an exact match anywhere.

  • 2000MA = 2A. I bet your little adaptor wasn't rated for 2A, which is why it went up in the smoke. You need an adaptor rated for 12V DC, 2000MA.

  • yeah your adapter probably wasn't rated high enough. I suggest going down to somewhere like Maplin, they will have what you need and they can give you advice.

Many thanks to both. I had thought the local electrical shop would give good advice too, seems not from your replies. Nearest Maplins is miles away so this will have to wait a while. Thanks again. Liz

Maplin have a great website. This adaptor is powerful enough but you'll need to change the cigarette lighter socket to the correct plug that fits your TV (you can cut the leads and use connector block as it is only 12v). Don't cut the 240v side!

You may have a cigarette plug lead that came with the TV anyhow, this could then plug straight into this adaptor. If you modify the lead to fit your old plug into the TV, make sure you get the polarity correct, you will damage the TV if you don't.

  • I'm sure we could identify the correct adapter to order off the internet. What sort of plug is on the end if the old adapter?

I'm grateful for your replies. The cigarette lighter lead is fine - quite separate and came with the tv and doesn't need anything doing with it. It's the power lead to plug it in in the kitchen that is faulty though I see how the adaptor in the link would overcome that using the adaptor shown.

I'm afraid I don't know enough about it to name the type of plug that goes into the tv itself and certainly won't be modifying anything, changing polarity (or not), cutting leads or suchlike! I'll wait and take the old one into Maplins next time I'm anywhere near and get them to give me a replacement. I can live without a tv in the kitchen until then.

Many thanks again and for researching this for me. Sorry to sound dense about this, I know lots about lots of other things but not electricity!

The cigarette lighter lead is fine

Then just buy the adaptor I showed above and use it with that. 2A adaptors are much more rare and I doubt Maplin will have anything in their shop that they don't have online.

Be careful if you are offered an unregulated power supply as a TV is a fairly sensitive piece of electronics.

Thanks, yes I will. It will be handy for other bits of kit in the motorhome too. Brilliant idea.

    Thanks again, Liz

I too have one of these power adaptors that has failed. It is for an August International 9.2 TFT LCD Colour TV/Monitor (Type DA920A). The details of the power supply adaptor are as follows:
    Model: BHD-DY24XL
    Input: 100V-240V ~
    50Hz/60Hz 0.4A MAX
    Output: +12V 1800mA
I suspect that an internal fuse may have failed in the power supply adaptor. It is a soldered in glass encapsulated fuse in the input power line. I sent an e-mail to support@augustint.com asking them if it is possible to obtain a replacement fuse, have the power supply adaptor repaired or obtain a replacement power supply adaptor. I received a reply the next day saying that they do not have the fuse for the power adaptor, but you can purchase a power adaptor from them for £18.45 including p&p. If you would like to order one telephone 08452500586. For only £18.45, I think that it is worth buying the correct power adaptor for the TV so I am going to do that. I might also see if I can buy a suitable replacement fuse from Maplins for the old one as well. Of course the fuse may have blown because there was a fault with the power adaptor or the fuse may have just failed for no real reason. It does happen sometimes!

Goodness, another answer to this. I tried the adaptor from Maplins but unfortunately it made such a racket I had to return it. It has an inbuilt motor/fan or something, I thought a plane was taking off in the kitchen. So I ended up just leaving this.

However I now want to sort this out, it's stupid having £100 worth of tv and not being able to use it unless in the motorhome using the cigarette lighter plug. I tried it in the kitchen last week with the ac adapter and it worked fine for a couple of hours and then stopped. I can't get it to work now at all.

Interestingly though, although your plug logieman is the same model, it isn't quite the same. Mine says 2000mA whereas yours is 1800mA.

Have you managed to sort it out now? Presumably I'll need to prise the plug apart if I want to change the fuse, but it seems a simple thing.

    Thanks for your reply
