Help with wedding film discs (file formats)

Hello....a friend filmed our wedding semi-recently and gave us 5 mini dvd discs which play on pc or dvd player.
I want to put the contents of each disc on the pc hard drive so they are easily watchable on the pc but I'm struggling..
If I explore a disk it contains a folder in which there are around 7 files all with strange file types. The ones marked .pop are the biggest in size so I assume this is the film itself. I tried to copy the files to the hard drive but this doesnt seem to work.
I'm guessing I need to convert the file(s) to another format (avi/mpeg...I dont know which is best)....anyone any ideas how to convert the files?...
cheers

ok heres how to get them onto your hdd easily and quickly plus it is fully working trial software
download tmpgenc from http://www.tmpg-inc.com/download/tsda.html
its about 12mb
once downloaded and installed start program and go to source setup (at the top second from left) then click on add dvd video. Once you click this a window will pop up asking if you would like to save the video to hard drive, click yes and select folder. This will now save the file as a single mpeg2 file but bare in mind that it will be the same size as the dvd ie if its a full disc then it will be 4.7 gigs so if youve got 7 discs thats almost 30 gigs.
You could compress to divx etc but it does take a fair while to convert, if you want to save time i'd suggest using dvdshrink first to shrink the size of movie to size /quality you require then rip it to mpeg with dvd author.
if you need any help give me a shout as there a few other things you could do but i dont wont to confuse you too much in 1 post0
