Utilities in rented flat

Does this seem right? Son moved in his rented flat on the 1st April and was asked to pay £60 for gas/electricity two weeks after he moved. I guess the bill came after the ex tenant left. Last week, he was asked to pay £125 which to me seems a lot, we are not even in winter. It's a 3 bedrooms flat shared with four people including a couple. He has been in the flat for 5 months+ and so far has paid £185 for gas/electricity. Should he ask to see the bill, he won't and just say it is ok and pay? I dread to think what the winter bill will be like!! Thanks

Well it works out at £37 a month which isn't too bad for gas & electric. He could ask if the bill is divided by people or bedrooms, the couple may be paying as one so the bill is only actually split three ways even though there's four of them. The problem with flat sharing is that you often get at least one who isn't careful about using the gas & electric so the bills end up high and everyone has to pay for it. My son used to house share and the heating & lights seemed to be on 24/7, luckily the utilities were included with the rent so he never had a high bill to pay.

If your son doesn't want to ask to see the bill perhaps he could ask how much the bills roughly are so that he can budget for them.

Can you back up this claim?

OP - This link takes you to Utility Warehouse. It is incredibly likely that if you register through that link mlmpro2512 will benefit financially.

If you want to look for the cheapest supplier, use a compariosn site, and then double check using the pence per kWh prices it gives you, not take advice from someone with a financial interest in a single company.

(I'm about to get slated as I work for British Gas, but I cannot benefit financially from any decision you make about your energy supply)
