My son wants a PS3 but we are getting mixed answers as to whether he will be able to play PS2 games on it.
He has loads of PS2 games that he still wants to play. I don't really want to have two consoles connected to one TV.
Thanks in advance!

I was looking into this the other day.
As far as i could find out you CANNOT play ps2 games on a ps3 if it has a 40gig hard drive.
But if it has a larger hard drive it should work.
Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.0 -

well according to wikipedia you need to have the 60GB ps3 to play ps2 games

and according to this site http://www.mcvuk.com/news/29601/PS3-backwards-compatibility-to-be-resurrected they might resurrect it in the future.0 -
Took this from the PS3 website:
PLAYSTATION 3 (60GB) System
Some PlayStation 2 or PlayStation format software titles may perform differently on this system than they do on PlayStation 2 or PlayStation systems, or may not perform properly on this system.
PLAYSTATION 3 (40GB) System
This model of the PLAYSTATION 3 system is designed to play PLAYSTATION 3 format software and has limited backward compatibility. This system is not compatible with, and will not play, PlayStation 2 format software. Some PlayStation format software may play on this system.
The vast number of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games available in Europe (including upcoming titles) are being verified for play compatibility with PLAYSTATION 3. To identify the compatibility status of a specific title, please use our Backward Compatibility Status Search.
The status of titles may improve as we continually update the PLAYSTATION 3 operating system software, including individual game software updates, so please be sure to visit this site often to check on the very latest PLAYSTATION 3 compatibility status for your PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games.0 -
only the American and Japanese 60gb and 80gb ones can play ps2 games. the 40gb and 80gb currently on sale in the UK will not play ps2 games, but they do play ps1 games as sony removed the graphics chip for the ps2 emulation from the euro 40gb &80gb ps3s.
and the thing going around about getting a 60gb ps3 hdd and sticking it in a 40/80gb ps3 is a load of rubbish as the original 60gb ps3 had a ps2 graphics chip in it0 -
As has already been said, you do need a 60GB PS3 to play PS2 games. They aren't produced for retail anymore, so your best bet would be Ebay or stores on the high street that trade in consoles.

That's a link to 60GB PS3 consoles on Ebay. You should be able to find something there. There are some mint or otherwise brand new consoles flying around."MIND IF I USE YOUR PHONE? IF WORD GETS OUT THATI'M MISSING FIVE HUNDRED GIRLS WILL KILL THEMSELVES."0 -
Argos has the 40GB and the 80GB models, the 40GB model says "not compatible with PS2 games" but the 80GB doesn't say it,have they overlooked it?

Yes, they have overlooked it. The 80GB PS3 does not contain the hardware required to play PS2 games."MIND IF I USE YOUR PHONE? IF WORD GETS OUT THATI'M MISSING FIVE HUNDRED GIRLS WILL KILL THEMSELVES."0
