Raffle Prizes

When running a private raffle can you allocate the prizes in reverse order to build up the suspense? i.e can the first number drawn be given the bottom prize? Doesn't sound fair (or legal) to me,

what do you mean by a private raffle?

Generally, a raffle can be drawn in any order at all, although I'd say don't do the top prize, then the bottom prize then the middle one, but hey.

Really you want to make sure that the prize being drawn for is selected before it is drawn.
ie. 'This is for the giant teddy bear (YAY!), ticket number 324'

I'd say that if you've 'ranked' your prizes 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc then you could indeed draw them in any order you want.

Raffles without 'proper' tickets (ie only sold at the event itself using cloakroom tickets), you might want to let people choose their own prize, so you wouldn't know what people would think was '1st'. I'd take chocolate over wine any day, even though the wine might be worth more.

  • I mean the sort of raffle run at an event, sell the tickets on the day using cloakroom type tickets. Most raffles i've been to usually allow the person to choose but supposing you listed the prizes in a programme and then gave the bottom prize to the 1st ticket out, is that ok?

If the raffle is a private, bought on the night affair I don't think there is a problem which order you draw the tickets. If the prizes are numbered 1st, 2nd etc and you make it very clear you are drawing the tickets in reverse order, otherwise you may get disgruntled punters. I doesnt alter your chance of winning a prize and it does build the tension!!

    Good luck.

Ps: always have at least 3 different coloured sets of cloakroom tickets. You will find people will usally have 'one of each'

Alternatively have two raffles running consecutively. One for the usual bottle of wine, chocs and cuddly toy. One for a more substantial prize - alcohol hamper etc etc. People will buy more tickets esp for the more substantial prize.

I have been fund raisinf for just over two years - just on a small scale - but have tried it all ways  !! So to speak
