Moving gas meter

I am currently deciding whether to move my gas meter from its awkward spot in the front room to the outside. my concern apart from the ridiculous amount national grid gas want to charge me is that i have an old lead pipe coming into the property supplying the gas.
Will national grid gas automatically replace this ? or is there an element of discretion. (I really dont want my garden dug up to be honest)
of course i have to pay up front before they will do anything so before i do i just wondered if anyone has had there meter moved

Of course it may depend on how far you are planning to move the meter, but if it needs upgrading and if the pipe is big enough they usually just pass a plastic pipe through the existing pipe to line it avoiding the need to dig up your driveway/garden"Now to trolling as a concept. .... They will upgrade the new service to plastic. Incidentally, much of the cost is due to the costs of excavation and re-instatement of the highway. A lot of people think you just dig a hole,do the job and throw the muck that came out back in the hole and pat it down. No,it has to be re-instated to the correct spec and the work may be inspected by the local authority.0

Thank you for the replies guys. I dont want any major work carried out (meter moved less than 2 mtrs) and the garden is landscaped to how we wanted it, i dont want to have to start again with that...
i might just do it myself..
