Hi all,
Long story short...downlighter in my kitchen not working, think its the transformer (each bulb has its own transformer). Just removed the transformer (switching off mains first) and the thing is toast! Its all black and burnt looking. Had difficulty removing the wires.....
Okay, so now Ive got it off I haven't got yet a new one to replace it. I have a cable hanging from the hole in the ceiling with nothing connected to it. Is it safe to turn the mains back on? Am I correct in thinking that the cable will be live? What should I do with it? HEEEELLLLLLPPPPPP!
Sorry if this is a stupid question but Im new to all this and can't afford the call out for an electrician...many thanks to anyone that can help!

The best thing you can do is connect the cable to a connection block and put some electrical tape over it.
The cable will become live when the lights are switched on but is safe left unconnected.
Suggest you get it fixed asap0 -
i would also connect to a block and put tape over it. at a push you could just snip the wires off level and put some tape on.
no problem in my house as we are all diddymen. no chance of touching a live wire on the ceiling.
(wife is 4ft 10ins).Get some gorm.0 -
Flang and Ormus, thank you so much!
I cut the wires level andput some tape over it, took myself to the local electrical supply shop and found myself a very helpful young man.
Guess what?!?!?!?! I FIXED IT! I am soooo pleased with myself!
Thank you all so much for your help (and Ormus, I only beat your wife by 3in..all good things come in small packages!)The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart....0 -
Clever you!
Cutting the wires level was not a very good idea. It is quite easy to get a whisker of wire crossing to the other wire. If you have to do it again put the cut wires into a terminal block. and a bit of tape around the outside. Alternatively, cut the wires different lengths so that there is no chance of them touching.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
