Hello,
How do i know what I need to get my computer ready for the internet. Lets say my next door neighbour, (because i havent asked him yet, i wanted to know if was going to worth it first) has kindley agreed to share his wirless internet connection with me, how do i go about accessesing it? Say do i need to buy a moden or a networking card or something? I have no idea what any of these things are, but if you tell me i dont mind buying them, without knowing.
Thanks

Your pc has to have a wirless network card in it and you need to know his password too.
Something like this will do you:

once you have the network card, you may already have it if you have a newish laptop. YOu will need the encryption key, you then scan for wireless networks in range, find his then when you connect to it, it will ask for the encryption key. Easy as that.
Although I would hope he says "No" as I wouldnt want anyone on my network I didnt really know, no offence to you but if you start d/l less scrupilious sources of information he can be held liable due to the connection being in his name."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

its a very open ended question
you can get on the internet lots of ways.
using next doors wireless isnt normally the first thing someone who knows not a lot should be doing.
also wireless maybe great fun but a wall or 2 dont help
also i really doubt anyone will want to share a connection with you, for one its not expensive to get your own. 2 security is an issue 3. who wants to share bandwidth with someone else?
The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.0 -
hello,
Thank you for not jumping to to many questions and helping me. Basically i am having some problems getting the internet set up at home and I am very close to my neigbour. I will be offering them some money, if i so ask about using their internet. But I wouldnt be using it for downloads, or anything dodgy, just to do some basic work from home a couple of hours a week.
If you dont think getting the internet is expensive, try paying £145 for a BT phone line to be installed and three months line rental, then trying to arrange for Broadband to be connected, then to be told all of a sudden you no longer have a BT line (its been stolen at the exchange) and if you want Broadband, you will need another BT line installing at a cost of £120. So me thinks £265 just to get one working phone line, plus waiting another 8 weeks to be able to work from home, might, just be a little expensive in terms of time and money!Debt free since July 2013! If you don't have a wireless network card you can use a wireless dongle which plugs into a usb slot. We use one for our old computer which desn't have wireless, cost about £15 if I remember correctly.
Have you considered non-bt providers, like telewest, or mobile internet from mobile phone companies?Anytime;)0 -

you see thats the first mistake - not getting it sorted with BT (and they are not the only option) phone lines simply dont go missing if i woke up one day and i wasnt connected via bt anymore i think i would have a word with them and paying for a new line to be instlled would not be an option..
its the same cable - it isnt going to disapear from outside your house or at the exchange. I dont want to sound rude but there must be something you are not telling us or you are missing something out or dont understand something..
basically no one pays for a bt line then it magically goes and bt ask for more money there is more to this story
but yes if u want to connect wirelessly to next door then go ahead..but if it was me i wouldnt want anyone on my web connection you never know what they get up to and the web has a way of tracking you ...The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. telewest is no more its no virgin media
OP i normally wouldnt share an internet connection but since its in his name he's culpable for any illegal downloading,0 -
I am honestly not hiding anything I have been communicating with Ofcom and everything. Aparently phone lines being stolen (at the exchange) is more common then you would think. the problem was, that i was told by my telphone company (who is actually the post office) that a company had stolen my phone line and diconnected it, therefore if i wanted another phone line, i would have to pay them to install another! (which i think was a major line, and Ofcom were not happy) I know, is sounds completely barmy to me, thats why Ofcom are try to help me sort it, starting by trying to find out who stole my line! Argh!
I will have to see how things go, before i consider asking my neigbour, i just wanted to know if it was going to be something that was feesible. I could also borrow a dongle for a day or two.Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.0
