Can I claim compensation

We have Luxore surfaces fitted by Whitehall Fabrications although bought from MFI. They have been a sore dissapointment. They have scratched been damaged by heat, lost chips and crumbled round the beveled edge where they were actually used. They are very very beautuful but only for showrooms I fear. To top it all a few days ago our underhung sink fell out:eek:

It had only been glued in, it has now been repaired but had broken the plumbing (which the repairer just pushed together) and the water filter unit. All in all my once in a lifetime kitchen renovation is a sorry disaster because of this surface and company.

A very small kitchen cost £3,600 to surface, including the sink two years ago.

This surface is sold as a very hardwearing one which is why I chose it as we are a busy household of five and really use our kitchen and I paid out the extra money as an investment expecting the kitchen to stay looking good.

We are still paying off the loan we took out to do this and I feel that we really deserve compensation for this and the stress level it has induced. I want to do it properly though and wonder if anyone here has any experience or advice.

Thanks Maire

sounds like they are either not fit for purpose or faulty. I would take it up with MFI and explain that you want it replaced or a refund of the entire cost including fitting.

Yes, step out of the "compensation culture" frame of mind so you can decide what it is you need. I'd suggest a letter to MFI, take some photo's, keep a diary and get them to replace/repair what you have.

Sadly in life many things can and do go wrong. In the UK we can only generally be compensated for a financial loss so your idea of compensation for ... the stress level it has induced is not really on.

The problem, if I may say, is that even if MFI do a top job putting all this right, you'll still feel short changed as you weren't compensated for your stress.

PS - I hope you find your chips :rotfl:

  • What it is with the compensation culture in this country now? In fact, I feel that I need compensation now. Who do I sue?
  • Thanks Latecomer

I have contacted MFI but they are very bad at getting back to me and are at the moment in the middle of a management buy out. Maybe I should go and visit the local store with my photos.

thanks Mutton Geof but I am not in a compensation culture, I would just rather be able to buy my kids Christmas presents than be paying for a product that is not fit for purpose.

I am worried about repairs as I just think I might be back in the same position in another couple of years as the product does not seem fit for purpose, I am also very reluctant to have my life turned upside down again by having the surfaces refitted.

Perhaps I should have called it a refund.

Funny about the chips but they would not be very filling.

Ionkontrol you may think you are funny but I am not in the mood, just imagine how you would feel if your sink plus a full bowl of hot water fell out of your surface.

I'd definitely go to the store that you bought it from with photos and see what they say. Get them to send someone out to look at it so you can highlight all the problems.

You need to give them a chance to put everything right before thinking about anything else.
