ASUS laptop in Morrisons £199

  • There are some daft statements here - it won't fit into a handbag (well it will in a big one!) and it is a powerful mini-computer. You need to identify the model. It probably is the 900. The 901 is the latest of the small size computers and is the best - I've got one. It runs Windows xp perfectly well and the battery in the 901 lasts up to 6 hours (it really does). It's got Wirless n - more powerful signal and bluetooth and a very good 1.3 built in webcam. It's solidly made and you can more realistically carry it around in a bag or rucksac.

and office style apps and playing video and music files and some classic games like monkey island 2.

how many video/music/game files could you fit on a 16GB HDD though? After the OS and program files (mine sits at 24GB so half it?) there'd be not a lot left if the average film is 1GB

Just got this for my daughter from Pixmania for £209 but it's the version with XP so we could easily run mobile broadband. We had the 3 day 5% code off and Quidco.
Too many children, too little time!!!
    :p
  • I have been using an Eee pc for about a year now. Its great for browsing the web , loads so quickly. I write my essays on it and save to a memory stick. Its brilliant for the kids , i would highly recommend it. Theres quite a lot on it , touch typing skills, dictionary, educational games as well as enjoyment games. Its so dinky i love it !
  • So many of these are being mis-sold to the misinformed.

Lots of kids will be disapointed this xmas when they open the box and find one of these novelty toys.

They may have a place, they are OK as mentioned for internet use and writing letters and essays.
But totally useless for games which im sure most children will want to install.

1st shock is no CD drive how do you install a game without one, especially these protected ones that require the CD.
  • I've got an eee 901 and it's the best thing I've bought in ages.

    - it's light
    - it's compact
    - the battery lasts 6 hours
    - it's fast enough for all internet, office, email etc. stuff. You only need more power if you want to play the latest games or do things like video editing. I'd recommend Linux if you don't mind learning new software; it's free and runs vastly better on lower hardware than Windows.
    - it has no moving parts except for a small fan so it's really quiet and very durable.
    - there's very little reason to need an optical drive nowadays. It's a much better trade-off to have a smaller laptop than having to carry around the CD drive all the time. If you find you really need one, just buy a usb CD drive for £40 later. It's useful if the drive breaks on your desktop PC too.

I just don't understand people that think buying a laptop with a 17-inch screen, weighing 3kg, 2 hours battery life etc. is a good idea just because it's got the latest fast CPU, graphics card and memory. They're not portable (heavy and bulky), they run noisy and hot, and they have terrible battery life. Very very few people need that kind of power on their computer unless you're doing graphics editing, video editing or number crunching.

Thanks all, this information is really useful to read, as my DD is wanting "a laptop for school work" and we really had no idea where to start.

If you can't do games on it, maybe the Asus is the way to go!
  • advent 4211 is my favourite.

also if you put xp onto a linux asus surely you void the warranty because they class it as you putting illegal program onto it

You can put Windows legally onto it by buying a copy of Windows and I don't see how pirate software would void the warranty on the hardware.

Besides, if it's for school work, firefox for browsing and openoffice for essays/spreadsheets/graphs is more than enough for anyone. You don't need to waste money and time putting Windows on it.
