New Fence Help

Hello all,

im not having a lot of luck figuring out what i need in terms of Posts/Panels for a new fence so i was wondering if someone here could help me.

I have a friend that can hopefully get me some what ever i ask for pretty cheap (thats the money saving bit)

I need to give him a rough idea of what i need, but thats the problem :)

I wish to replace my current fence it is currently 7 panels long (well actually 7 and 1 third of another panel) i have 2 6foot panels and the rest are 4foot these are attached to wooden posts.

I wish to replace this setup with 7 new 6 foot panels and 7 new concrete posts (i will keep the exisiting wooden posts at either end of the fence and reuse 1 third of 1 of the 6 foot panels for the small bit at the end)

I wish to get the wooden panels that simply slide in between 2 concrete posts.

So my question is can any wooden panel do this? if not could anyone link me to some that do - and what sort of concrete posts would i need i know they need to be 9foot but for the fence panels to be able to slide into them i assume they have to have some form of groove?

could anyone send me a link to a fence panel / fence post combo that will work like this.

Sorry for being useless - Thanks in advance.

I would get someone to do it for me but its about £800-900 and as im sure you noticed no one has any money these days :)

  • All you need are "slotted concrete fence posts". Make sure you get the panels before the posts are installed as it's easier to put them in as you go along rather than risk a measurement of 6 foot and try to drop the panels in later!

They are easily replaceable but fence panels are not made to an accurate tolerance so you may need to "adjust" when you come to replace them in years to come. Make sure you install concrete gravel boards for the fence panels to sit on though, this will extend their life greatly.

Concrete looks horrible but you can paint it with fence paint to help it blend in.

Thank you Mutton Geoff (good name!)

I will have a look for the posts and hopefully not pick a panel that wont fit :)

I will indeed be getting concrete gravel boards the wooden ones dont seem to last long at all.

  • I'd buy a matching panel for your last third and cut it down. It's easy to pull off the edges, saw the panel to the right size and nail the edging back on. It will look neater.

I'd also put concrete posts in to the ends so it all looks nice too.

You'll need to hire a post digger (looks like a pair of narrow shovel scissors) or a petrol one to do the job, it's pretty back breaking! Start at one end and use a string line to keep it all lined up, and prop each panel up with long battens pushed into the ground and nailed to the tops of the panels as a temp measure til the concrete around the post dries. Don't concrete right up to ground level, fill only to about 2-3" below so you can put soil back in and turf/plant right up to the posts.
