Money Programme Radio 4

Anyone else catch this? According to the 'experts', any loss of deposits in savings accounts will be - ta-daaaa! - all the fault of the savers. You should blame yourselves, you see, because you got greedy and went for the savings accounts with the highest rates of interest, therefore you should have KNOWN that an element of risk - even risk of loss of deposit - was involved.

This is savings accounts we're talking about btw. Not the stock market, funds, single shares, or putting your life savings on the 3.30 at Kempston Park.

I kid you not and I'm not exaggerating their comments, not even paraphrasing much.

What were the poor helpless bankers supposed to do, with you slutty savers in your short skirts leading 'em on, eh?

It was Alvin Hall who said that (I think that's his name). I quite liked the comment (can't remember which one said it) about taking the senior bankers out, lining them against a wall, and shooting them. And to top it off, with no blindfold, and no last cigarette. Paul Lewis quickly said he couldn't condone that... (no cigarette?! Barbaric ;-)

A few resignations/sackings would suffice for me, with retrospective confiscation of 5-10 years worth of bonuses...

It was the IFA bloke who came out with my comment I believe. An IFA slagging off bankers for lack of financial knowledge and prudence. Hello Mr Pot, this is my friend Mr Kettle, and I'd just like to disassociate myself from this whole debacle...

There is an element of truth in that. However, like many things in the media, its taken to an extreme.

Also on the programme, they played a recording of a top bod from Icesave interviewed on their programme last weekend (immediately before the crash, but after Iceland's PM said his country was about to go bankrupt).

The Icesave bod stressed how strong Icesave was, and how very, very safe our deposits were.

    Don't you just love these *ankers? (I mean Bankers - honest . . . )

You should be able to get to it from here:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/moneybox/7657356.stm

It's the write up introducing the programme and has links to the Saturday show, and tonight's live show. I haven't tried them though.

Also "expert" Ros Altman saying that the icelandic banks were looking dodgy months ago and only a mug would have left money in them (I paraphrase), before the bloke chairing the discussion pointed out that she had been on the program 3 days before the collapse recommending them...

All these senior bankers have narcissistic personality disorder:
