You need to be able to buy and sell on the American markets. I'm not sure if Selftrade does that, but HSBC's InvestDirect Plus definitely does. Sorry, I don't know any other trading platforms well enough to speculate.

Check Selftrade first, and if you want to use that, search for the referral scheme here and net yourself an extra £85 or so to play with.

  • Hmm isn't it expensive to buy shares with companies like Apple and Google?

Don't they offer them to a specific set of people?

Anyone care to enlighten a newb?

 .......................................it's a link to their web page.

I'm not one to ask "Whats in it for me?"

    I would'nt know what a referral was........

I guess trying to offer help for nothing other than a "thankyou" is against the rules....my bad

If I were you I would think twice before buying shares in any company¥ that makes the majority of their income from online advertising. the online advertising market has slowed down and most companies will post a lower profit this/quarter.

This includes google, yahoo facebook etc...

You say you are investing for the first time. Don't let me stop you. But I will point out something that I think you have overlooked. As these companies are quoted on Wall St, the prices quoted are in US dollars. You will have to take into account fluctuations in value between the dollar and sterling. So that makes the timing of buying and selling more complicated. Get it right, and you'll get a bigger bonanza than if you had bought a British company. Get it wrong, and you will lose far more, or your profits will be eaten away by a bad pound day.
