No it's not. The aim for the foundation stage (so up til end of Reception year) is that children should be able to write their name. There is no mention of this needing to be in cursive script, but some schools still encourage this as they believe it makes later progression to 'joined up' writing easier. I am surprised also that your pre-schooler is getting 'homework'! Practise writing sheets are a pretty old-fashioned way of approaching early writing these days and unless your son enjoys writing in this way, then I wouldn't push it - you might do more harm than good! Try http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/eyfs/ for more info.

He likes the Letts Little Wizard books, and we also do Jolly Phonics at home, so he does enjoy learning the letters and to write, but i don't force him and follow his lead as to how long we sit for a session. I really think the Pre school are going to do nothing but confuse him with this, and ruin his hard work.:(

Mostly his homework is a show and tell kind of thing, or "go to the woods and collect some things to show us it's Autumn" etc, I did think homework was abit much.

  • Maybe go in and have a chat then Liney? Tell them your concerns about his confusion over the different shapes of the letters. Perhaps he's just a very good writer and they think he's ready for cursive?

My son is at Pre-school and will be starting primary in January, but has been sent home with cursive handwriting sheets in order for him to learn to write his name and the alphabet. He can write him name, but he certainly doesn't do it in cursive, which is something i remember learning to do prior to joined-up writing.

I was going to have a word with his teacher about it as i feel it is far too advanced to expect 3 and 4 year olds to be able to do this, and is confusing for them when they are only just learning the sounds that letters make. Is this normal practice now?
It is certainly the case in my son's school, although the Headteacher won't allow them to learn letters / writing / phonics on the on-site Nursery which is REALLY annoying

My son is in Year One and has shown very little interest in writing, I am not too worried as he has two older brothers who were the same but are now both in the top sets for all subjects.
However I intend to spend 5 minutes a night doing these worksheets.
They are ideal for keeping him interested.

I am going to make them into a little workbook for him with his name on the cover so he can show everyone how clever he is!!!!!!!!!

  • DS is learning to correctly write his name, he's just started fulltime in Foundation. Not cursive though, just forming the letters correctly at the mo. Hes doing really well. Altho even with a line to write on he seems to go uppp and dowwnn lol.

    Forgive me for butting in!

I don't have any kids, I have just look at the sheets in the link, no wonder why the small kids are confused, I would be as well at my age, I never wrote like that.

I take it this is what you call cursive writing?

I will print out some of the sheets so at least I can try and give her a bit of extra time doing these letters. As you can see we have to fill up the rest of the page with items beginning with the Letter.

My sons school also teach cursive script from reception. When we had a meeting with the Foundation Stage teachers they said it is hard work but well worth the time and effort. I have one in Reception and one in Y4 - I'm still waiting for my eldest to have 'beautiful' handwriting! But the teacher did say that because of the way the letters are formed - most start on the line and have a 'way in' and a 'way out' IYSWIM - it is immpossible to form the words incorrectly. ie drawing a circle and adding a 'tick' for letter 'a'.
  • ELLA - how old is your DD?
