Anyone been to Austria?

I'm looking at going to Austria for around a week on 24th Nov. Salzburg will probably be the airport used as it's only £50 or so return.

Has anyone been? Can anyone recommend a good city to go to? Somewhere with lots to do and good public transport? I'd be ever so grateful!

Salzburg. Very pretty and historic. Take a short trip to the salt mines at Halen (Sp?)
  • Yeah I think Salzburg's the place! I found a great hotel at TripAdvisor too. I can't seem to find any flights now though, which is a bit of a nightmare. I swear they were there a few days ago. The search continues!

    Which hotel?
I love Salzburg to bits. Spent about 6 weeks there and got married there.
It's the perfect base to explore a much larger area.

Austria is a fantastic country and a major tourist destination. Vienna is one of the five greatest cities in the world.

Salzburg is not bad; Insbruck is in the mountains and a good base for ski-ing.

However, beware of the more remote rural areas. Many people there are fascists, and hate all foreigners (including the English) the way the BNP here hate Asians. I wish that the more civilised Austrians (of whom there are many) would do something about eliminating these Neanderthals.
