Help - placed transaction without account number

Help! Need reassurance - anyone else done this?

I had a busy day transferring money on Tuesday. We have money from my MILs housesale that was originally with just one provider until the crisis hit. In my panic to spread the money around to no more than 50K a provider, I moved £45K to a new Capital One account on Tuesday via BACS from my Nationwide Account. Just checked to see if it has arrived and it hasn't.
:( I checked the sort code and account number for Capital One on the transfer - all entered correctly but Capital One do things differently from the other banks that I transferred money to that day and I didn't realise that I was meant to put my own account number in the reference section as well as Capital one's own account number. (The account number line is taken up by their own main account number. I only glanced at the sign up letter and thought the money transfer account number was unique to me like the other banks.) So I think Capital One must have my money in their main account but have not put it in my account.

Being Sunday Eve, I can't contact Capital One right now, so does anyone know please...
  • Does the "Name" field get passed on between the banks?
  • Does the originating account and sort code get passed to the receiving bank so they can track my transaction down?
  • Will they just bounce it or will it just sit there?
Please can someone reassure me that one way or another I'll be able to get at the money eventually and that it hasn't been lost in the ether :( Tis a lot of money to lose!

It will go into a 'holding' account. When you ring, and give details of your accounts and the transaction, they should be able to find the money and put it into your account.

You definitely will not lose. I made a mistake on the name field recently on a transfer to Northern Rock and it just came back to my original account. Phone Nationwide when open and they will be able to track

Thank you so much guys - nothing like MSE for 24/7 reassurance!
  • You'll be fine, I once transferred money to my Dad's account and transposed two digits! Panicked when I realised and was told it would be returned to me but in reality they managed to allocate it to the correct account. Don't worry....
