Networked Hard Disk Drive

I have an external HDD which is connected to my home network via the router.
Because of the location of the router, I would like to move the HDD and attach it to my pc directly via the RJ45 connection (no usb/firewire on HDD).
Would the router still issue it with its ip address or would XP attempt to issue one.
At present it has a static ip address set.
I am not bothered if it is no longer accessible to all other PCs on the network as they do not use it anyway.
In hindsight a USB version would have been a better buy.

Er, Run a new cat5e lead to the HDD. Relocate HDD to PC case. Buy Ext. USB caddy. Buy internal caddy.0

I know that the HDD can be reloacted into a usb caddy, but can it be used without plugging it into a router in its present state.
Use it a like you would a usb attached drive, but plugged into the network interface.
As it currently has an ip address set by the router is this possible.
I cannot try it a present as I am not at home, like I said, should have got a usb model instead, but the price on this WD 500GB World Book was too tempting at the time.0 -
Not understanding it's present state? A HDD is a HDD either a Solid state drive (I doubt it) in PATA or SATA configuration. What are you going on about the router for? Just stick it in the PC, drop the idea of a ip address if you are not using it as intended as a NAT drive.0
