Halifax 2% cash back credit card

Halifax have a cash back credit card where you can earn 2% cashback on all your grocery and fuel purchases, as well as 0.5% on all other purchases. But what supermarkets and fuel stations are included in this list?

It says "we identify a fuel or grocery purchase by a code which is supplied to us from the store where you made the purchase. Certain stores may not use these codes and therefore 2% cashback will not apply to those purchases."

Does anyone know what stores are incuded with this offer? Is it all Tescos, Sainburys, Morrissons?

Is it a good card to get? Thanks!

The codes are 'MCC' codes and are listed in the card's terms and conditions. These will each cover a range of store names (I think 5411 looks familiar) MBNA used to list them on statements but not any more.

    Cashback
You will earn 2% cashback on any purchases that qualify within Merchant Category Codes 5411, 5499, 5541, 5542, 5172, 9751 and 9752. These are industry category codes which identify the purchase as being fuel or from a food store. There may be certain stores who do not use these codes and 2% cashback will not apply to those purchases. If you want to check whether a store uses these codes, you can do so by calling 0845 300 0323. You will earn 0.5% on all other purchases that qualify on your account

(thought so!) KTF has helpfully posted here with regard to these under the Abbey 5% cashback offer last year
Supermarkets within Merchant Category Code 5411 include
    Asda
    Co op
    Morrisons
    Sainsbury’s
    Somerfield
    Tesco
    Waitrose
(All these will work with the Halifax/Bank of Scotland card so that's a start...)
.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam
  • I have the similar Barclaycard cashback card. I have so far received cashback from Texaco, Esso, BP, Tesco and Morrisons. Havent had any petrol stations that I havent got cashback from yet
  • Continuing from Milarkey's list of codes, I've done a bit of digging and a list of MCC codes can be found here

One of my credit cards actually helps by showing the MCC categories relating to my purchases, so here goes with some examples.

    5411 Grocery Stores, Supermarkets
    • sainsbury's
    5499 Miscellaneous Food Stores
    • local shop (for local people ;))
    • tourist/speciality food shop
    • welcome break shops on motorways (* see below)
5541 Service Stations (With or Without Ancillary Services)
    • asda petrol
    • esso
    • independant petrol station
    5542 Fuel Dispenser, Automated
    • morrisson's petrol
    5172 Petroleum and Petroleum Products
    • no examples
9751 UK Supermarkets, Electronic Hot File
    • asda (non-petrol)
9752 UK Petrol Stations, Electronic Hot File
    • shell
    • BP
    • Murco
    * Moto retail does NOT count same as Welcome Break - listed as "Miscellaneous and speciality retail stores, which is 5999 - note the "WB Shop" means just the shop - costa coffee, or whatever, will show as a restaurant or eating place - can anyone confirm what Road Chef shops come under?

ebay food purchases via paypal come under (iirc) professional services not elsewhere classified, so don't count for 2%

I don't think we need a definitive list of what IS included, but if anyone comes across what they think should be a food store/petrol but isn't included it would be worth posting here.

Note that it is the SHOP that counts, not the item purchased, so a microwave bought from ASDA should count under 9751 and lunch bought at an esso station should count as 5541

    How it works

Your total cashback will be shown on your statement each month. Cashback can only be claimed in multiples of £15 by contacting Customer Services on 0845 728 3848.
    Seems a bit odd.

I've had accounts before where you can call up the cashback as and when you like - Morgan Stanley did that, I think. It can be good because you don't have to wait the full year, but it does mean that you have to be careful with your cashback claim - if you decide to bail out at a certain time, make sure you round up your spending to a level that allows you to take your cashback first.

This looks like a great card for me as almost all of the stuff that I put on a card are food or fuel related.

Is there any time limit on this card for the cashback or is it just ongoing until they pull the card like GE Money?
  • No specified end date - maybe tomorrow, maybe next year.

http://www.halifax.co.uk/creditcards/cashback_4.asp is similar but includes a BT option, though you wouldn't want to mix offers.

cashback_2 and cashback_3 have been withdrawn

I applied for this the other day and got the paperwork through towards the end of last week. Its still available as a 2% cashback on food and fuel as this is detailed in the enclosed t&c.

the Halifax card selector tool on the website also lets you drill down and select this.
