I battled for nearly a year to save going BR, doing extra jobs etc etc. In the ed, the repossession of our house 12 yrs prior, with interest from the halifax, amounted for the majority of our debts. In the end, i decided BR was inevitable and after comeing home to another letter from the bank increasing my cc to another 5k, well the inevitable happened. I booked a little holiday with the kids to minorca, spent 2 weeks sole serching came back and filed my BR. That was Oct last year. Nearly 1 yr on, no job, no debts but we are happy. I owe nothing, for the first time in ages. Xmas is going to be small but paid for.

Do i feel guilty about going BR, yes but not as guilt as the banks should of be for offering a credit card to a single mum of 2 (at the time) with a limit of nearly £40k unbellevable.

My new life has started, its great and the job hunting has begun.........

  • I feel guilty at times for being disappointed at people. I guess if I had run up debt myself I'd understand. Some people do BR as a last resort and some take the pee. Funnily enough its usualy the ones who genuinly had no choice who feel the most guilt.

  • I`m not BR but struggling for 20 yrs to bring up a family & keep a roof over our heads & having to work 70 hours a week & still not have enough for even the basics has been hard. Suddenly illness strikes & it all falls apart!! The worst part is that mostly just `managed` to tick over...it is when something out of the blue happens that it all goes wrong. For me it is the debt of a property, OH gone BR & left me with the joint debt as well as my own & then my illness!

As well as personally feeling guilty I do blame the irresponsible lending tactics of the financial institutions. I used to have a couple of small limit credit cards that I could manage easily....then over 20 years they (the Banks) increased limits, offered consolidations, buy it now...pay whenever. The list goes on . It was my descision to spend but when you are stressed & the kids need clothes, shoes, christmas presents then the vicious circle gets deeper & suddenly cards get used for essentials like shopping & petrol !! Thats when I should have realised but always thought I would earn more, sell house for better price ....I really did have `head firmly in the sand` !!

    Just my thoughts , Angex
