Can anyone help. I have just tried to trim my Guinea pigs nails. I must have caught it wrong and it has started to bleed.
What should I do?????
How do I stop it bleeding and how do I stop it being infected.
Any help:eek:

If it is still bleeding go to the vet. Most vets have an emergency service, and I don't know much about guinea pigs, but they can't have that much blood volume to start with.
My emergency vet gave me telephone advice (for free) when I rang about my Dog who had eaten a chicken bone.0 -
when the vet overclipped my dogs nail she applied arnica cream to it, it helped to stop the bleeding0

You can get a powder to stop it. Tried talc? Ground chalk?Anytime;)0

A tip from a groomer friend of mine is to dab the bleeding claw with flour - it helps the blood congeal !!
(then get it checked out at the vets!)0 -
Thanks to everyone .
Just rushed down to Pets at Home and have bought some blood stop swabs. Seemingly they are quite good and will stop infection. Had lots of info while I was in there.I was told to put icing sugar on to stop it bleeding!!!
and also to buy a pencil that men use to stop bleeding when they have shaved.
I chose the swabs though as I thought at least they will stop infection hopefully.
phew panick over I hope.0 -

Just been outside to check on my Guinea Pig he seems ok and at last the nail has stopped bleeding. His cage looks a bit scary as there is quite a bit of blood spotted around but he is sitting quietly. He came down his run to see me when he heard me coming, so hopefully everything is ok. That was really scary I don't think I will try cutting his nails again, but take him to the vet instead.0

Just thought of something else.
Guinea Pig has really long hair and he has a little bit which is matted together. Is it to cold to bath him as he lives outside. I brush him but this part isn't going to budge. Or would it be better just to cut the matted bit off????
Thanks0 -
After the recent trauma, I would leave it be for a few days then try to cut it off.0

Obviously, if the matted bit is near his posterior, vet might be a good idea ...
If it's not, is the matting tangled or is there some dirt / blood sticking it all together? I'm guessing it's dirt as you're thinking of a bath: would wiping just that bit with slightly damp cotton wool help at all?Signature removed for peace of mind0
