insurance for horse riding

Options
Hi there
I've been offered the chance to help exercise someone's horse, fairly regularly. They've asked me to get 3rd party insurance. I'm assuming this is to cover any accident whilst I'm riding their horse.

Does anyone know where I can get cheap insurance for this? I'm not a member of any horsey club and as this will something I only do once or twice a month I really don't want to spend alot.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Hi there

Third party insurance (also known as "liability" insurance) is to cover you for any damage you cause to other people or their property. It's called third party insurance because the first two parties to the contract are you and the insurer. Here endeth the lesson.

Third party insurance is usually included with home insurance; the buildings section covers your liability for people being damaged in or by your home (your best friend comes round and slips on your wet kitchen floor). The contents section covers your liability to the general public (hitting a golf ball through the windscreen of a car or riding your bike into the side of a car).

The whole point of me going on about this is that your Contents insurers may already be providing you with the cover. I suggest that you start by giving them a call and asking them whether they would cover you for any damage you do whilst riding and then get them to put that in writing to you. The riding school should accept the letter from your insurers as proof of cover.

If this does not work, the only insurer I know of that provides a "rider only" policy is Equine & Livestock. They are not a company I know much about and I'm not linked to them in any way. Here is a link to their website and the page on their rider policy:

If they want you to exercise the horse, they should pay the flipping insurance.
  • There is another supplier of 'rider only' insurance, there's more information about what the rider insurance covers here and the insurer is PetPlan Equine who seem to be well respected. They also do horse insurance etc but it sounds like you need riding insurance for someone who doesn't own a horse.
