House insance - open windows.

Options
If I go out in the summer and accidently leave a window open, will my contents insurance pay out?

I ask because I have always had an anti insurance attitude and I'm trying to justify to myself have contents insurance. This is the only way I can see myself claiming except for 'thousands to one' situations.
Regards

    Hi Xbigman,
I think it depends on the policy, on mine the £50 excess is doubled but others may not pay out at all. Check the details before you buy, you often get what you pay for - or to put another way, you often don't get, if you don't pay for it!!

Your attitude to insurance is your business, but all insurance is about 1000's to 1 chances - if it was about near certainities it would be even more expensive than it already is!

I've wrestled with the same issues when I first bought my house. In the end I decided that it was worth the £20 a month extra to buy contents. This is because:

    A) Its not much in the grand scale of things and I wouldn't really miss it.
    B) There's so many things that can go wrong, not just burglary. Fire, floods, accidents etc.
    C) If one of those "thousands to one' situations." did ever happen, I'd be absolutely gutted. Try explaining that to your wife/husband that you wanted to save £20 a month when your house has just burned down and you have no clothes etc.

    OK, thanks.

Attitude wise, I live alone so any insurance shortfall only affects me. If I had a burglary or other minor incident IE spilt paint on carpet, accidental damage and the like, I probably wouldn't claim anyway.
On reflection it doesn't save enough to warrant not having contents on with the buildings policy. This plus third party on the car are 'musts'.

    Xbigman,
I don't bother with accidental damage cover, but fire, flood, major theft and saving £20pm could cost you 10's of 1,000's.
  • Having been burgled twice I would not call it a minor incident - I did not have anywhere near all my valuables stolen, but still had thousands of pounds of items stolen. And as has already been mentioned there's fires and floods to take into consideration.

I would never even consider not having contents insurance, but that's my personal opinion.

Most insurance companies will class this as contributary negligence and will impose restrictions on what is clamed for in otherwords if they can get away without paying a claim they will. Statistics now prove that most homes are broke into not for contents but the car keys as they are so hard to steal now without them. Of course its up to individuals on how they feel about paying money out up front for events that may or may not happen.but i reckon put the premiums away each month and you will be able to pay out your own claims out without the hassle and being able to keep cool in the summer with no worries.
