Can anyone please tell me why, when the Dow Jones opens they all stand around clapping. Who are they and what have they got to clap about and why?
Cheers.
Cheers.

They're actually a bunch of trained seals, at the closing bell they play a terrific tune on the horn arrangements.
Really, I believe they're board members etc from listed companies... i bet they sure weren't clapping this week though0 -
The Opening (and closing) bell is bonged to mark the trading hours of the NYSE (not the DOW which is just an index). Google "NYSE opening bell for stuff about who's rung it etc.
It's a ceremonial thing, like switching on the Christmas Lights on Oxford St. Joe Bloggs could do it, but it's a bit more fun if they bring a few celebs in to do it.0 -
