DAB radio via freeview box & hi-fi sytem?

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to connect a freeview box to a hi-fi system to listem to DAB radio?

And what the quality of sound is like?

Guy here says it can be done and the quality is ok.

No, it's not. DAB radio and the radio channels that are broadcast on Freeview are two different things.

As the thread that you link to suggests, DAB is in most experts opinions very badly bandwidth-constrained, and so quality can be poor. The Freeview radio channels are reported to be significantly better than DAB and are typically transmitted at a higher bit-rate.

As the thread that you point to also suggests, you can quite easily connet the output from a Freeview box to a hi-fi (many have audio out, and some have digital surround sound out) but for some people it's a bit of a pain to have to have the TV or a PC on to change stations.

The thread that you linked to does however suggest a solution (get a Freeview receiver with a channel number display on it).

To my ears, the sound quality on Freeview is very good - I have a Freeview equipped PC connected to an amp and large speakers, and to me it's easily as good as FM radio.

I managed to alter a scart lead, to give L + R. Then used the spare outlet of my ancient Nokia (ondigital) box to feed a spare aux input on my even older amp.

Agree with fwor quality is very good it is then used for 6Music etc.
Regular FM is 500m away so have to use attenuated input socket, but Freeview is at 90° and 20miles away!
    Move along, nothing to see.

Many thanks. I'm away to purchase a freeview receiver with number display!

Goodmans used to make a Freeview box which also included a DAB tuner, the display on the front was a little small and if you didn't have the TV on you could see what you were doing switching it from Freeview TV mode, to Freeview radio mode to DAB mode.

It is a common mistake that many people make to call the Freeview digital radio DAB for some reason.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
