Hi,
I've heard Martin recommend the Telediscount.co.uk website a couple of times in the past and think I may have come up with a way to possibly save money using the service however you may see a few flaws in my plan.
I have a girlfriend who lives in Ireland and I've been calling her mobile in the past using either AlphaTelecom or Quip who require you to set up an account first off and you then dial an 0800 call number to make cheaper calls.
Telediscount works differently because you just pay for the call so to call her mobile I first have to dial a 0871 number priced at 10p per minute.
Now, if I dial Quip at an 0800 (free) call rate and then use the Quip service to dial to Telediscount and then call my girlfriend then the only company I'm paying is Quip at 3.5p per minute. Essentially I'm saving 6.5p per minute; around 65% off the already low call rates offered by Telediscount.
Only came up with this idea this evening..... Does it make sense or do they catch up with you in the end?
Cheers all!
Chris

What a VERY EXPENSIVE way to call Ireland.
The MSE CallChecker lists TWENTY-ONE WAYS to call Irish numbers from UK BT landlines for less than the 3½p you've 'discovered' (i.e. for ½p to 3p per minute).
I'd use 18185 at 4p connection and ½p/minute myself.
18185 0.50p/min
Ratebuster 1p/min (08447202020)
1899 1p/min
Budgetcom 1p/min (08448612612)
Abroadtel 1p/min (08447210001)
Bestminutes 1p/min (08448615959)
Phonebird 1p/min (08447212473)
DiscountDial 1p/min (08448616464)
TeleTop 1p/min
Telediscount 2p/min (08444624040)
Telestunt 2p/min (08444623737)
call18866 2p/min
Telesavers 2p/min (08444625353)
CheapestCalls 2p/min (08444623131)
DialAround 2p/min (08444629191)
Dialwise 2p/min (08444626767)
Topupnow 2p/min
Simply-Fone 3p/min (08449884333)
Liquid Dial Account 3p/min
Pennyphone 3p/min (08448965896)
Tele88 3p/min (08444300188)
Apologies, I've just noticed you're referring to calling her on her Irish mobile.
Please ignore all the above - it refers to calling an Irish landline from a UK BT landline.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Heinz is (as he says) quoting landline rates here. The checker says of Irish mobile rates:
DialAround 6p/min
Phonebird 7p/min
Bestminutes 8p/min
Telediscount 10p/min
Pennyphone 10p/min
Abroadtel 10p/min
Ratebuster 13p/min
etc...
But has chrisholgate stumbled across a way of calling 0871 premium-rate numbers for **only** 3.5p? If so, please let us know...0 -
Earlier in the year you could call 0871 numbers for 1p per minute, but it was a mistake by the company in question, and unless Chris or someone else establishes that this works, I rather doubt it, or they'll charge a higher tariff like for mobiles
I'm also taken aback that Quip! lists comparisons to BT tariffs that hardly any customers are still on - 7.91p per minute for UK landlines ... a case for Advertising Standards maybe? - though they do eventually admit ...BT rates were correct as at 31st July 2003 and exclude BT discounts.0
