Tranferring old vhs to dvd via Ion

Hi there, just bought an ION VCR2 PC - to say I am totally useless at most things technical I am doing OK with this - so I am recording the VHS onto the ION and then putting in onto Disc in my e drive, then to be double sure, transferring from disc to my back up hard drive. Thought things were going OK but tried to play from my hard drive and it is asking me for a disc in my E drive - why would that be - thought the purpose of a hard drive was that if you lost your discs they were saved to this drive to be able to play - am I missing something here????

so urgent rush but would be good to know what I am doing wrong.

thanks - explanations in really simple english would be great for me.
