can anyone tell me how you can clean the slate chimney breast that we have exposed ready for a multi fuel Log burner. The inside is covered in years of soot but we have had the chimney swept already. The facing is obviously covered in cement dust and the whole thing will need to be repointed. My husband has done the work himself and it looks fantastic already.

you can get a "brick cleaner" from wickes. its acidic so might work? Otherwise you could try a slate cleaner but I don't think they would be as heavy duty.0

I've taking out an old rayburn type fire with a back boiler an intend to put in a multifuel stove. The bricks are covered in a greasey soot deposits, some warm soapy water and a stiff scrubbing brush gets rid of a bit so you can see where to use acidic brick cleaner (I've bought it, but not used it yet). Its nasty stuff so you dont want to over use it. Make sure you wear goggles, gloves and if you can get them a disposable paper suit and a apron. Its a mucky old job. And is hard work.0
