Hello all. Just registered on the site.
I've been reading the Threads about Powergen with interest, and thought it might be helpful to others if I posted my Powergen dealings..........
Moved into my 3 Bed house May 2004, from 2 Bed flat, so no real idea on costs of Elect and Gas. Signed up with Powergen as they were my Elect suppliers when I was at my flat. Gave them the readings etc etc - DD set up £27 a month each.
All seemed to go pretty well - although the Gas bills looked VERY low indeed.
I registered onto the Powergen site and reduced my Elect DD and the Gas DD down to £20 a month each.
By July 2005 - Elect was in credit to £80, Gas at £216 credit. Phoned Powergen to get Credits paid back into my bank account - Elect was easy, no probs. On the Gas, they wanted me to give a meter reading, just to check things - did that and then they said I actually owed them £472.70 !!!!
I knew that this was rather unlikely, so upped the Gas DD to £50 a month (and yes, both Elect and Gas DD's are linked to the Tesco Clubcard points) - kept manually sending the Elect and Gas meter readings through my Powergen Ineternet account on a monthly basis.......just to see how the usage would be..............as you can guess, the 'figure I owed' went whizzing down, as my usage was very low.
The Powergen rep on the phone who told me that I owed £472.70, I asked them to look into my usage - well, I heard nothing from them at all.
As an example, my Gas usage from July 2005 - Oct 2005 : £36.27
Anyway, in mid-Nov I had a load of facts and figures, so I wrote to :-
Dr Paul Golby
Chief Executive
E.ON UK plc
Westwood Way
Westwood Business Park
Coventry
CV4 8LG
and sent a copy to Ofgem - and they forwarded it to :-
energywatch Central

Anyway, all that was posted on 21st Nov. This morning, I got a letter from Powergen saying that it's all been sorted.
Here is an extract from the letter "and note that the metric gas meter in your property is currently being billing as an imperial meter. This is because the technical data relating to the meter has been input wrongly on our records and resulted in incorrect billing and charging. Your meter readings should show as a five digit reading and not as a four digit reading as previously billed".
Also was given a direct number to the Directors Office and sorted out the Refund - so £250 (which is now the Credit figure) - is now to be put in my bank account..........although I did ask for a confirmation letter that this is done !!!
Sorry for the above essay ! But thought it might be useful to someone else.
If in doubt, keep records of your meter readings and then send letters to the addresses above.
Hopefully more of you will resolve your Powergen issues.

I also have had an excellent result from powergen but it did take a journey via energywatch. The lovely young man who phoned me today has put a smile on my face for christmas. I pay my gas bill from today. They are discounting the last 8 months. They have no record of the swap from my builder to us in our newbuild. A**** to powergen
and I was just reading about moneyplants a couple of hours before!!0 -
Thanks for the tip - I'll log everything once we've switched to them and see what happens.

I have put a sheet of A4 paper in my 'household' bills folder, infront of the Elect + Gas section............on that goes the meter readings.
As for what I got back, well it's a bit tricky to get exact figures as to what I was owed, but very roughly...........my figures stated an amount of £470ish on what the account needed to switch it from a 'Owing' to a 'Credit' situation - I got about £520ish back.
Overall, it probably works out correctly...............and plus points to Powergen to sorting it so quickly.0 -
how long did you input the meter readings before you contacted Powergen?
i must admit i do have a few problems understanding there billing.
Electricity Product Standard No Standing Charge
Payment Method Monthly Direct Debit
Payment Value £71.56 on 1st of the month
Last Payment 01 December, 2005
Last Payment Amount £71.56
Current Balance £121.77 Credit
does this mean they owe me £121.77??
i have registered on the powergen website and i will start inputting my meter readings.
i think i must use loads of elec & gas after looking at what other people pay

I was putting in meter readings for both Gas and Electricity from July 2005 - every month since.............just to get some sort of 'actual / real' usage and cost to me. The Elect charges were no problems at all - I was quite happy on that. Gas was the one that I really knew was completely wrong - just needed a few figures and costs to back-up my letter.
If it says Credit, then yes, you can claim it back.
Your costs (which I asume are Elect and Gas added together) look high - esp June 2005. But you might have a more than one person living there - a tumble dryer - or something else.
I've set my DD's per month, at the lowest possible - £20 for Elect and £25 for Gas : although I won't use all of this, so will get some back.
It's absolutely well worthwhile taking control of your meter readings and sending them online to Powergen.0 -
Remember that PowerGen bill quarterly. If you enter monthly changes you get an adjusted bill and not an actual bill IE it only gives you the total cost and not the readings. Your best bet is to put in your meter readings 2 days before your next bill is due. The date is on the website. This ensures an actual bill that you can reconsile with records of your readings.
If you are paying £71 per month you will be at least £213 in credit by the time your bill arrives. This is normal and you should go down to around zero once the bill is paid in the spring. In summer you might go 400+ in credit but go back down in winter.
