Kitting out my laptop for free - when do I remove Mcafee?

Hi all,

My Mcafee runs out this month and I am fed up of paying for something that is available for free! I have had a look through the security sticky and know what I need. I will be looking to get anti-virus, firewall, malware (thingy) and spyware (thingy) (obviously don't want malware and spyware but the thing that keeps them away, lol). My question is - do I have to remove Mcafee before I sort out my freebies? This worries me for the obvious security risk. I am just concerned that 2 different types of anti-virus sometimes work against each other so what is the best way to do this? I suppose I could download all the bits before I remove Mcafee and then install them once Mcafee removed, does this sound feasible?

Thanks for your help!

Rosie xx

download the new stuff, disconnect from the internet , and then sort out the removal and the new firewall, then reconnect and install and update the rest like the antivirus etc

    this will remove ALL McAfee

    Download and run MCPR.exe
    1. Download the removal tool from:

      http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
    2. Click Save and save the file to a folder on your computer.
    3. Navigate to the folder where the file was saved.
    4. Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
    5. Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.

Note: Windows Vista users must right-click MCPR.exe and select Run as Administrator.
    6. Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.

Your McAfee product will not be fully removed until the system is restarted.

    Thanks Browntoa!

Sorry if I sound a bit of a dunce but you mean I can reconnect to the internet when I've only put the firewall on? Then after reconnecting to the internet install everything else?

And sorry if this is even more stoopid but can I download that Mcafee removal tool now but not use it for a couple of weeks? Just so that I can get it onto my computer ready for D-Day. Same goes for the freebie stuff, can I download all that now but not use it till I am ready?

Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks for the advice Browntoa! When my McAfee subscription ran out last year, I tried everything to remove McAfee, including downloading an uninstall tool from the McAfee website. NADA. I could not get rid of it. In the end I stayed with McAfee and paid for a new subscription! Next time I'll try your advice on uninstalling first.

Though a heads up to anyone with McAfee as part of Sly BB... when my subs expired I kept getting e-mails offereing me all sorts of super cheap deals at discounted prices to renew McAfee - just click here. But I went direct to the McAfee website and got it for a fraction of the cost of the special Sky deal.

    yes ,

download the Mcafee tool in advance

to protect your PC you need a working firewall while you are connected to the internet to avoid problems , hence the advice to install that "offline"

download all your freebies in advance for D-Day , as you install them they will connect to the internet and search for any updates since you downloaded the installer file

any problems you can always come back here

so steps on the day will be

    1)remove McAfee with internet disconnected

    2) install new firewall with internet disconnected

3)Install antivirus and update with internet connected

    4) install all other software you have selected with the internet connected

expect to reboot PC several times....lol

    1. Firstly download all applications you intend using, firewall, antivirus, etc.
    2. Remove Mcafee using Add/Remove in control panell and then disconnect from internet
    3. Restart computer
    4. Install new antivirus, firewall, etc.
    5. Restart computer and connect internet
