Nationwide Credit Card - don't bother because they won't

Following the recommendations of this site on the page "The cheapest way to spend overseas", I signed up for the Nationwide Credit Card to avoid the usual optional fee when spending on holiday.

Six weeks after applying online to Nationwide, still no card. Having rung Nationwide's call centre and visited their branches, the conclusion has been that there's nothing on their system, despite having sent me the credit card agreement paperwork. Strange that.

It’s all very well having such a great deal for holiday money, but when the card doesn’t even arrive in time, it’s not worth the plastic it’s printed on.

So Martin, here’s my verdict on Nationwide (which you rated as ‘Good’)

Customer service = unskilled, unfriendly, incompetent i.e. Bad
Online banking facilities = would have been nice to send a confirmation email so I would actually have some proof of signing up, i.e. Crap
Credit card features = non existent for me (according to their database), i.e. S%#!

  • This doesnt seem quite right, or make much sense. You should be able to log back into internet banking and see the application you made... are you saying its no longer there either?

The fact you got the agreement must mean that your details have been stored somewhere...

They would have been stored, the application form that they send you to sign and return to a branch with your ID actually has a credit card number and an application reference on it (in the small office use only bit at the bottom of the credit agreement.

If that had all been done then it gets sent direct to the internet team to open your account. Are you sure you had the stuff through the post?

Stephb, your experience is totally the opposite of mine.

Went into branch on a Thusday, helpful staff did application for me, I was accepted, left with promise of Visa debit card and credit card. I only went in for a cashcard,

The credit card arrived the following Monday, a week before the PIN!

Nationwide do not run the credit card so they are probably not to blame. You need to contact RBS at Southend re your application, as they should have a record if they sent you a letter. The number to call will be on the letter you recieived . Just in case the letter came from Nationwide, they live at Swindon.
Maybe the agreement you signed never got back to them?

I applied for mine on-line and it must have taken 2 weeks or more for the card to arrive, then another few days for the PIN. As opposed to B/card where I applied for card on the Saturday and got it on the Tuesday.

I've had problems with Nationwide too. I applied for the current account (the credit card I'd already applied for arrived without a problem) and didn't receive the documents. I called them a couple of weeks later and they said they'd send them out 'again' and they arrived a week later. I sent them back and heard nothing for two weeks - I called and the woman I spoke to said they were working on it. Still nothing a week later I phoned back to be told they hadn't received my documents and would have to send them to me again. I'm still waiting...

I'm very happy with the credit card though - I order a lot online from overseas and save a lot as a result.

    No they don't.
Also, non of the departments i.e. internet banking or branch or credit card talk to each so if you have problem u have to go to the corect department even if one of the others !!!! up ( they can't / won't do it for u).As i have found to my cost, shame as they've have good products.

  • Technically Nationwide cannot run a credit card because they are a building society.

Their address is at the RBS credit card headquarters:
    Nationwide Building Society,
    Credit Card Services,
    PO Box 5291,
    Southend on Sea,
    SS99 6BX
