My daughter lives in a small flat and is getting large gas bills - £200 for 3 months but the only gas appliance she has is a gas cooker (hob and oven both gas) She has no gas central heating (storage heaters) or gas boiler I am worried that since it is old flats her meter is incorrect - bills are based on readings not estimates - it can't really be that much for only a cooker can it?

Any ideas what steps should be taken to get the supplier to sort this out - she has been there for a year and not very good with money so I am helping her get her finances sorted and was looking at suppliers but couldn't believe her consumption.

You say that you "couldn't believe her consumption" but have not said what it is. How many kWh has she been charged for? What does the meter say on it? Is it an imperial meter (hundreds of cu FT) or a metric meter (cu M)? Check that you are being charged for the correct type of meter. An Imperial unit is in the region of 32kWh and a Metric unit approximately 11kWh.

Shouldn't even cost that a year to run a cooker.

thanks to those that helped - just an update - got a reading yesterday and it turns out there was an issue with the first reading which they had taken incorrectly the subsequent reading 3 months later then showed a large useage which they subsequently used for all their estimates. They now have the reading - admit they have overcharged her significantly and are processing a new bill and either a credit or refund depending on the overcharge amount
