Switching broadband to Sky

I am looking into finally upgrading my sky package to Sky+ HD and at the same time thought I would switch to Sky Broadband package. The only thing is was wondering was about the actual switch from my old provider, I am currently with Tesco internet and was looking at the info on the Sky site about switching. It says to get a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC) from your old provider and have some example letters to download and send off. the letters read

" I am writing in order to notify you that I wish to terminate my broadband contract with your company and switch to another provider. Please can you action this as of today's date and provide me with a MAC code within 5 workdays."

This seems to imply that you are asking for immediate cut-off, is this the case? I don't want to be without the internet for a few weeks so hope that this isn't so.

Also is it better to get this letter sent off and get the MAC code before I phone Sky to sort out the package?

Sorry if the questions seems dumb.

Thanks

your broadband will not get off as soon as you ask for the MAC. (you should be able to ring up and get one )

You need the MAC code first , then give that to SKY when you sign up, worse case you are without Broadband for a few days but normally it is only for a few hours

  • You dont need the mac code straight away to order bb from sky. You can get your bb provider to text you it or send it out in the post, i dont think they tell you it over the phone now. The mac you request will last for 30 days. Sky can order the bb & if you call back within 10 days then the order will go ahead as normal, if you dont have the mac within this time then sky will just re-order the bb for you. It takes sky around 14 days to provide you with bb.
Have you ran a dsl check on sky.com to see what you can get in your area?

???? I checked the availability on Sky's site and for the postcode it said that the base, mid and max products were not available in my area but in checking with the phone number (which I guess is more precise?) it says my line supports speeds of up to 5mb per sec.

Should I be checking something else?

It means that Sky do not have their equipment(LLU) in your local exchange.
Therefore as you have discovered they cannot offer you cheap broadband.
You would only be able to get the Connect (BT based) product at around £17/month.
You could do and exchange search on Samknows to confirm this.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
