Back again still in safe mode, I ran avg and it said partition table (mbr) reading error, and Boot sector of disk reading error. I couldn't find how to deal with this, any help with this please??
I then ran ad ware. it said MRU list (148). tracking cookies 3. and win 32 Trojan downloader TS update 10 object.
don,t know if it was correct but I have deleted them.
Then ran c cleaner.
Re started windows normal mode, and just the same. ( page can't be displayed.) tried disabling avg pervx one at a time and just got the same results.one thing though I can't get or disable sygate at all( does this need internet con to work?)
my next step it to Chk disk (JimArnald) can you please tell me how to do this and also reboot F5 what does this mean?
Sorry to be such a pain, I am very thankful for the advice.
Michelle
Just a though should I try system restore and go back to Thursday when the PC was OK.( never tried this before either)0 -
Ok I wouldn't worry too much about the adware for now
start in safe mode then get a dos/command prompt (probably start all programs accesories) at the c:> type in chkdsk hit return and then wait it should then check your file structure and correct any errors it finds. It it finds any and corrects them then try a rebootTANSTAAFL !0 -

win 32 Trojan downloader TS is bad news. A downloader can help itself to anything from anywhere on the net. I think you could have pretty much anything now - bad luck.
Have a read of http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

Hi,
Just dug this out of my Useful file:
Slow XP Shutdown
If you have a slow XP Shutdown, try this:
Click Start, select Run and type:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
Press enter after each one and wait for the success message
Not sure whether it will work in your case where your PC won't shut down.

No need to panic yet. Stay in safe mode. What does the AVG scan tell you now?

Assuming your running windows XP. Create a new user account (with admin controls), login to it. DOes it work now? If so it's a profile problem, just copy your files accross and dump the old one!

Yes, you could try this, although just copying files across won't copy many of your preferences as I have done this in the past and had to setup my Instant Messaging, E-mail etc.weemee wrote:Assuming your running windows XP. BTW, What WeeMee means (as you said you aren't very technical) is create a new User Account (in Control Panel) ensuring you give it Administrator privileges (a setting when you create the account). See if you can logon to this account. If you can, you have to copy all of the files from your old account over to your new account. You can either do this by copying files from C:\Documents and Settings\[old account] to C:\Documents and Settings\[new account] or by going into System (Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance then System) or Windows Key and Pause Break on keyboard. Click the Advanced tab then under User Profiles (second option) click Settings. The pick your old Profile in the list, click Copy To and then find the new location (C:\Documents and Settings\[new profile name])
Sorry it was a bit long but I thought it needed explaining in a bit more detail.0 -
Thank-you so much for your replies, last night i couldn't connect even in safe mode so missout on some of the advice. the only thing I could think to do was reinstall xp, I can now connect in normal mode and even recieved some emails. I am in the process of updating and scanning the system. my first was adware and it found Alexa 10 objects I deleted these ( was this OK) I then had to reinstall AVG because it said it was damaged, this scan was OK.
Just trying to check my system with sygate, but the results are confusing and I can't find an option for dealing with them (Like how to close an open port) can you recommend anything else for this, I used to have zone alarm in the past but it developed problems so I had to uninstall it.
Can you thing of anything else I should be doing to clean up and stay safe.
Thank you
