Electricity Shock!

We have just paid Southern Electric £2,000 for this quarters electricity bill, because our bills have been estimated for the last 2 years. They now want me to take two readings at different times as they think the meter has been installed incorrectly e.g. Economy 10 tariff on during the peak time and the standard tariff on during low time. If this is the case they are saying we may owe them another £2,000, can we be liable if they have installed the meter incorrectly. I was also looking at switching but Southern Electric only do this lower cost daytime tariff which we need because we have Electric Panel Radiators which need a continous supply.

Please advise, many thanks

  • If it's a transposed reading they should easily be able to correct the billing. If you've E10 and are using it correctly the majority of use should be at the cheaper night and/or boost rate. If it's round the wrong way you've been billed your bigger usage at the higher price. When this is corrected it will be in your favour. What's unclear is how inaccurate the estimates were.
