Alternative to paper shredders

My second paper shredder has died on me, infact it blew up in my face! I am fed up of spending money on something that isn't going to last. Does anyone know of other ways of disposing of letters, receipts etc? Can i wrip them up and put them into my compost bin?? Any ideas gratefully received.

Thanks.

Use them to wrap peelings etc, and compost them. It won't take long to be too soggy to read.

I bought scissors with 2 sets of 5 blades a couple of millimeters apart. Aching thumbs if you have a lot to shred!
