Car Servicing Advice

I disagree, if you are going to rely on the “serviced in accordance with manufacturers specifications” rule to keep your warranty alive then if VW say change whatever and you don’t then you are giving them an opening to wriggle out of the warranty,
Obviously if they say check rather than change then it becomes subjective but I’d have thought that the technical writers would be keen to remove as much subjectivity as they can when writing the service schedule.Genie

leaving a car inactive for a long period of time (like 6 months) will do more damage to it than running it regularly for the same period due to corrosion and lack of lubricants (the oil runs to the bottom of the engine when not in use, over time the internal parts are no longer coated in oil).
hence you should turn the car over every few weeks and leave it running for 5 or 10 minutes if you have not used it.Genie

Yep, reading the small print is always a good idea as is putting sun cream on children and washing hands after visiting the toilet, but the relevant bit is that if the OP follows your advice and doesn’t change a filter that VW "insist" should be changed then the warranty could be at risk.
OP…. jeannie is right in that you can get it serviced at any garage and your warranty will continue as long as they do what VW say should be done. You could phone round and get competing quotes but frankly you’ve been quoted £250, knock off the vat and it becomes £210 which isn’t a huge sum so I’d be surprised if there was loads to be saved. Depending on when you plan on selling it might be worth going with the dealer to keep the history perfect as dealer history cars are worth more.
