I need opinions about plinth light spacing?

I bought some very, very, very, cheap :D small lights (the kind you use in decking/kitchen plinths etc) when our local B&Q closed down and relocated a couple of years ago and I've finally found a use for them. :D

My problem is deciding where they should go and how far apart.

Imagine kitchen units in U shape. Should the lights go all round on all 3 kickboards or just on the main one at the bottom of the U?

The lights are small and discreet...only 15mm in size. How far apart should they be spaced?

I've seen pictures of kitchens online where the lights are only on one side but they do seem to be bigger lights most of the time. I'm thinking it might look a bit daft to only have one side done since my lights are so small? There again would it look too much if all 3 kickboards had lights?

Each board is around 2.5 mtrs long btw.

I have plenty lights and available connections so those are not issues I need to think about, it's purely about how it would look.

Opinions please? Anyone got plinth lights? Anyone got pics? :D

I was thinking roughly every 500mm/600mm but wasn't sure so the pic is handy, thanks.

All sides or 1 side though?

Just space them out evenly along all of the plinths. If you have to extend then cables just make sure you make the cable to each light the same or you will a colour difference
  • Don't just start at one end and think I'll stick them in at Xmm ctrs.

Assuming all 3 sides of the U shape are equal then divide the number of lights by 3. If the two sides are longer then use more on these.

Set them out from the middle of the units but be careful don't just say right one in the middle and then every 600mm to the ends. This makes them look bunched in the middle.

The gap between the last light and the end of the run needs to be half the dimension between the other lights [if that makes sense] they should then look balanced.

When I did mine I marked out all the position with a blob of bluetack first to see how it looked.

Thanks all. I wont have to extend the cables as they are plenty long enough already thankfully. :)

Really good idea about blobs of blutack. Simple idea but effective and as luck would have it I only just bought some the other day.

(I was faffing about with the lights and sellotape but it wasn't a great system, lol.)
