Earning money when someone is depressed

  • To echo others in this thread, it's both good and sad to know none of us is alone in this.

I think I had experienced depression intermittently for a number of years, and it finally came to a head at the start of this year. I developed acute anxiety focused around work, and was finally signed off sick eight months ago. Essentially I had to retrain to keep my job, was effectively demoted, and was doing two jobs at once for six months, which made me so anxious I could barely sleep, and I was having palpitations and panic attacks to accompany the depression.

Thanks to a great GP (and I have a phobia about doctors, too) and two fine CPNs, I am starting to feel better. I can thoroughly recommend the Living Life to the Full website mentioned earlier in this thread. It is good for gently challenging your thinking.

I have taken some decisions about work, the main one being that I don't feel my current job is a healthy environment for me. Most of my stress and anxiety is about meeting expectations, so I have decided that I will be happier working for myself. I am looking to move house in order to open a B&B; I can manage the amount of social contact this will entail, and have good backup from the OH, who has been great through all this.

I have also started doing some craft work (thanks to the threads on MSE), which is making me feel more fulfilled again. Although money is tight, as I am no longer being paid, I am starting to feel happier than I have in ages. I think that I may be able to sell some of my craft work in order to support the income from the B&B, and the thought of not being dependent on a single source of income is removing a lot of my anxiety.

I have also managed to eBay my way to a holiday next summer, which has given me something positive and a treat to look forward to, even as my savings are diminishing...

All I need to do now is sell my house....but that's another board!
  • oh my goodness, I can't believe I recognise something in every post. I am always tired, sometimes have to pull myself out of bed, get so scared of even the smallest things at work and find it difficult to settle in with people at new jobs. I have panic attacks and palpitations and I never really want to go out. I have never realised that these things were connected or symptoms of anything, I have just always felt like a failure. I can't believe there are so many people feeling similar things. I suddenly feel a lot less alone.

That's exactly how I felt when I started visiting the message boards here, although it took me ages to get around to registering and then posting. Here's to better days... (In my case, imagine a pint of coffee!)
  • Hi everyone,

I'm 25 I left school at 17 & went to work for the MOD & eventually resigned after a years maternity leave (my son was born May 07). I have had & am still suffering from Post Natal Depression. I have the same problems as others on this thread & also my husband works shifts so getting childcare to coincide with that is a nightmare. I am also 20 weeks pregnant & since I came off my Anti D's have felt worse than when I first went to the docs this January. Anyway I am hoping to try some of the suggestions on here, I have already spoken to my local Oxfam & they are willing to take on volunteers for odd days (as Husband works 8 day pattern). This was after I had a knock back from Cancer Research because of my age & apparently the "young" people find it hard as it involves a lot of lifting - I was wearing my 9 mth old son in a sling at the time the manager said this to me! I used to deal with 100s of people in a high stress job & now seriously doubt if I will ever do again, but we will all get through it & we are not alone. I just wanted to pass on a link to a website for a free (yes completely) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Course which I have just started - https://www.livinglifetothefull.com

    Take Care everyone

I work in a College which has a specially trained Mental health team. This team provide so much support and encouragement to sufferers of varying conditions. They try to find them a suitable course, and allocate 1 to one support in the classroom, and throughout the building if required. It is very flexible and fits the needs of the users. It may be worth a thought, courses range from Floristry,Computing,Art,Fashion Design, through to all the academic courses.

Many Colleges all over the country are doing this so there is likely to be one nea all of you.
  • Hi all
I don't suffer from depression, but my partner does & this means I am the main breadwinner. I do a few extra jobs, some of which you may find suitable.

Sell on Ebay & Amazon earnings £120 a year
Make things & sell at craft fairs earnings £150 a year
    Take in a lodger £400 a month
    Become a dog host £400 a year
Work on an adult chat line £100

Apart from a lodger, none of these makes big bucks, but with most of them you can work when you feel up to it & not when you don't.

I don't mean to sound patronising, I just wondered if any of these ideas might help.

Never let success go to your head, never let failure go to your heart.
  • It was really interesting reading through this thread... I'm in the same boat as many of you. I have never worked but after two years of being a virtual recluse, I'm now at college, hoping this will be the start of better things for me.

I'm pretty much incapable of relating with anyone, or even talking to them. When I'm out, I feel as though the whole place is closing in on me and I can't breathe. I often go out with my mum but end up rushing back to the car because I feel like everyone is staring at me. I think I have social anxiety, but I'm not sure. My symptoms could fit into so many different diagnosis and I have days where I just can't summon the energy to do anything.

I would really like to do something else to push through all the fear I have, and eventually I would LOVE to have a paid job. I have been thinking about volunteering but would need to find something that won't push me so far that I don't bother turning up :o
