advice on old stamps

I have some stamps - not sure whether it's worthwhile putting on ebay or not.

Was wondering if anyone knew of somewhere online where I can identify the stamps, something that will help with descriptions and to see whether they are worth much

Any ideas gladly accepted...

Try looking on eBay for completed listings of the stamps you have? You should be able to gauge their value from that.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

If I believed Stanley Gibbons (which of course is based on what they would sell the stamp for not its actual worth) then I would be sitting on a fortune here. Instead, like everyone else I can't sell a darn thing, not even first day covers will sell.

My ex OH is a stamp dealer. He buys and sells at stamp fairs, usually held in church or community halls on a monthly basis. If you see one advertised in your area take along a list of what you've got and ask if any of the dealers is interested. I can tell you that you won't get a fraction of their Stanley Gibbons' catalogue value. The only time you will get a really good price for a stamp is if it is a rare issue, if it has missing colours, if it has an exceptionally interesting postmark or some other unique quality. Channel Islands stamps might interest some collectors.

If you have something unusual, see if you can check with SG catalogue online or at a large public library. Penny blacks are not always as valuable as other, rarer stamps. If you Google 'world's most valuable stamp' you get a whole array of different suggestions :rotfl:
