When I ran an internet cafe a year or so ago I thought it would be a great idea to get all the computers running this in the background - especially as they were idle a lot of the time or just surfing the rest of the time.

Well packed that bright idea in after a few days!

Slow response when taking over an idle machine. Frequent crashes and odd messages appearing.

Pity as it seems to have great potential but they can't really test the software for all circumstances on their budgets.

By the way - more lives would be saved from Aids if
A) The drug companies released the full patents for their drugs for use in poor countries
and
Some African countries recognised the true causes of Aids and made condome available and condemned tribal remedies for a terrible disease.

Joe_Bloggs, I have no real experience in this field to tell you about successes... I guess the best I can do is give you a link to Wikipedia list of projects. Some of them have been marked completed. Grumpyoldgit, excellent logon. I have no real advice on this. But the WCG also serves the Human Proteome folding project. You can specify the project you wish to work on and you may find you don't experience the same slowdown with that. I'm probably teaching you to such eggs here, though. From my own experience, I have very little difference if responsiveness whether I am running the WCG or not.

Cymro1170, overheating processor, eh? I have no idea why the temp would get that high. Mine stays nice and cool even if I am doing video editing or gaming in parallel with the WCG. Thanks for joining the team, by the way. The more the merrier.

Fraserca, good idea with the internet cafe. I guess you are right the only time I experience any slowdown is when returning from the screensaver. Maybe <1s pause. But I'm not running a business on my computer, so that matters less to me! The errors etc can apparently happen with firewalls, AV programs etc. Inconvenient, but necessary for security.

I also agree with you about the patent issues with the drug companies. If only they would license the, for example, Indian generic drug manufacturers to churn out millions of doses and ship them to Africa... They didn't get to be some of the biggest companies in the world by being philanthropic. The cultural thing is difficult though. I agree with the distribution of condoms. I agree with medically proven treatments. But you can't ignore the culture, upbringing and surroundings of the AIDS sufferer. There WILL be local "remedies". There will be a reluctance to use condoms. It is not always about the availability. I do agree with you, though.

It wasn't that high before I installed the software, and it isn't now that I've uninstalled the software
