Unemployed - What benefits can I get?

Hi,

Reading and hearing all the time about benefits I was quickly checking what I would get in case I would lose my job. I only could see JSA which is only GBP50 per week. Which is nothing in a place like London.

My circumstances:
Living together with my girlfriend in a rented accomodation from a private landlord.
Working for around 5 years in the UK and paid NI, Taxes etc..
No kids, and around 10k in savings abroad.

How am I going to pay my rent after I lose my job, will I get housing allowance or is this only I you are living in a council house? And any other funds to pay for food and the utility bills?
And what else will I be able to get on benefits?

Please advice??

  • Get unemployment insurance asap (I take it your query is hypothetical?) and use your savings til you find another job. Your girlfriend's income will be taken into account when assessing you for anything means tested, but you won't get anything other than contributions based JSA anyway til your savings drop to £6000.

wow have you got alot to learn about benefits, best stick around if you think you might need them, your savings would be counted even if they are in a foreign bank and your partners income would restrict any means tested benefits

Means tested benefits are still paid but at a reduced rate when someone has savings of between £6000 and £16000 if they do not have a working partner.

If it looks likely that you're going to lose your job, start hunting now, before it happens. It's always better to jump than be pushed.
